Finally, some good news!
Claire Buffie, the new Miss New York, decided that she didn’t want her life ruined by Perez Hilton and entered the competition on a gay rights platform. She plans to run for Miss America with the same one.
Just kidding! But seriously, Perez Hilton sucks for ruining Carrie Prejean’s life, even if she has questionable morals. I think she was pretty damn brave to answer Hilton’s question the way that she did, though I disagree with her completely. Any credibility that Hilton had — any at all — was lost when he made videos calling her a ‘dumb bitch.’ Sickening, really. Really great, well-thought out response, Perez! You really make me want to support you!
Anyway.
I’m pretty much in love with Claire Buffie, because not only is she the first Miss America contestant to run on a gay rights platform, but because she is amazingly eloquent and really taking the opportunity to publicize some under the radar issues.
Watching her interview with MSNBC was so refreshing. I highly recommend viewing it or at least reading the transcript here. However, for now, here are …
… some reasons why she is just utterly fantastic, and you can take them at face value:
- She does not believe that running on a platform with such a sensitive topic is going to hurt her chances at winning the competition, because she is working in her community to make “positive and lasting change,” which is what the organization is looking for.
- She is an advocate for gay rights because she believes that it’s her “duty as a straight ally” to stand up for her sister, who is a lesbian, and ensure that she has the same rights as a straight woman.
- A major part of her platform is that ‘gay rights’ is an umbrella term for a cornucopia of issues that “so many people only equate to marriage.” She wants to bring to light the fact that one of the greater issues at hand is bullying (in person and on the internet) that LGBT youth face. Part of her Miss New York essay emphasized that 30% of youth suicides can be attributed to sexual identity issues, and that “that’s something that we can’t avoid talking about this subject anymore, we need to bring it to the forefront of conversations in American families.”
- When asked about Carrie Prejean’s opinion, she was eloquent and said only that “everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and this is my opinion and I think it is one that needs to be heard.”
DAMN. And those are just the high points.
I love this girl! Especially because she is going out and talking about the LGBT issues that no one else will. I guess I’m going to be watching this year’s Miss America pageant for the first time in my life, even if it is a glorified beauty pageant.

She sounds like a smart cookie.
The giant picture of the scary woman haunting the site disapproves of this post. She is judging it. And I don’t think she likes Miss America.
hahahaha!
I’m thinking about paying that giant woman for a spanking!
Don’t waste your money. Blurry and I will do it for free! *grin*
Perez Hilton didn’t ruin Carrie Prejean’s life; she did that all on her own. She was yet another example of preaching “family values” and the “sanctity of marriage” and virginity to other people while privately being a hypocrite. Her dumb mistake was being a hypocrite on video.
A ‘glorified’ beauty pageant? Isn’t it openly a beauty pageant?
Woah folks the expendables will be awesome
