You can breathe easy, America, because thanks to credible journalist Glenn Beck and credible politician Sarah Palin, honor has been restored to your purple mountains majesty, your spacious skies and, of course, your ever-delicious amber waves of grain. I have to tell you that up here in the Great Communist North, where my gentle American heart has been corrupted, there was a cool breeze that chilled our bones on that historic day, letting us know that America would not join Canada in its hateful, hedonistic Socialism. And we wept, friends, we wept.

To prove just how much he loved America, Beck held this nation-changing rally on the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech and in precisely the same spot. Tasteless, you say? Not so! Because Beck had the support of King’s niece, Dr. Alveda King, who stood with him at the rally — risking her life and reputation.

Beck claims that what he was doing was not only noble, but …

… incredibly dangerous. So dangerous that he told Alveda King he was wearing a bulletproof vest during the event, and although she did not follow suit, he claims that she is now a “marked woman” for having stood on that step with him. If you can stomach it, here is a clip of Beck arguing how he has nobly risked his life and his fortune to participate in this rally and this movement.

People are calling King Beck’s pawn, saying that she’s been “duped” or “tricked” into supporting him. But why, exactly? King has a history of conservative politics and activism, and has supported Beck for a while, according to ABC News:

King, the niece of civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. and daughter of his brother activist A. D. King, is currently the director of African-American outreach at the pro-life group Priests for Life and has recently stepped into the spotlight after several appearances on Beck’s radio program.

There is no doubt in my mind that Glenn Beck is an idiot, and that his “Restoring Honor to America” rally, held at the same day and location as Martin Luther King’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech, was unbelievably tasteless. But I do think that villifying Alveda King for aligning herself with him is a little silly.
On an ABC News program, Ron Claiborne interviewed King and asked her to help him “to understand at least why some agree with Democratic Congressman John Lewis’s assessment of the Beck rally as an affront to the Civil Rights Movement.” But should Alveda King necessarily have to be her uncle’s figurehead? Should she have to align herself with the people he aligned himself with? Hardly.  I may not like what Alveda King is doing or saying, but I don’t think that arguing that she is somehow helping to dishonor her uncle’s memory is appropriate — she is an autonomous person with her own thoughts and feelings.
But what’s your take? Is Alveda King dishonoring her uncle? Is she being used as a pawn?

Alveda King does have a history of conservatism, and thats why she was there. Glenn Beck is popular,as is Sarah, because people are fearful of the run away debt and excessive spending. They saw what was happening in Greece and realize we’re on the same path. As far as disrespecting MLK,I have a feeling he would have rather been there than at Sharptons little sock hop. Martin was a smart man and could see a huckster for a mile! I love Canada,I even put vinegar on my french fries,I mean freedom fries.

I don’t think Alveda is disrespecting MLK’s memory; she’s her own person, and I seriously doubt Martin would have been offended by his niece professing her beliefs freely. I do, however, think Alveda is being touted around as Glenn Beck’s little black trophy…”see, look guys! Black people like me too! Martin Luther King Jr’s niece likes me, I’m totally legit and everyone who disagrees is a commie!”
