In the wake of rumors of a reconciliation between Levi Johnston and Bristol Palin, Johnston is making a public and, ahem, heartfelt apology to the Palin family, particularly Sarah. Whether this public self-flagellation will mean anything to the Palins remains to be seen, but it’s big of him to make the effort. I guess. Or maybe just the politically savvy thing to do, all things considered.
“Last year, after Bristol and I broke up, I was unhappy and a little angry. Unfortunately, against my better judgment, I publicly said things about the Palins that were not completely true,” he tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I have already privately apologized to Todd and Sarah. Since my statements were public, I owe it to the Palins to publicly apologize.”
Johnston and his sister Mercede appeared on CBS’ Early Show in 2009 to fight claims that their family is “white trash” and other alleged Palin lies.
From NY Daily News:
The Johnston siblings accuse Palin of lying about Levi staying in her home. According to Levi Johnston, he began sharing a room with Bristol in the Palin household a few weeks before the birth of their son, Tripp, and stayed there until the couple recently split.
“They said I didn’t live there,” Levi Johnston said. “I stayed there. I was like, OK, well, whatever you want to call it. I had my stuff there.”
Asked directly if the Palins were lying, Johnston replied “Yes.”
I don’t know, Levi, I think that’s pretty definitive. He also spoke out about Palin’s talk about selling out resigning as Alaska’s governor to write a book and make big bucks (before he did pretty much the same thing by posing for Playgirl). His slamming pulled no punches on the lack of parenting in the Palin household as well.
“Even before she was nominated,” Johnston writes, “there wasn’t much parenting in that house. Sarah doesn’t cook, [her husband] Todd doesn’t cook — the kids would do it all themselves: cook, clean, do the laundry, and get ready for school.”
Whether this is true or not — and that’s really between the Palins and God, as far as I’m concerned — it was pretty crappy of Johnston to talk shit to the media for his own gains. I mean, it gets very personal and, as a family insider of sorts, he’s going to get some credence. People were bound to believe him. He’s crying off now, but does anyone really believe that he completely fabricated these pretty harsh accusations?
Bristol Palin, for one, is trying to smooth the issue over.
From People:
Bristol added her own statement Tuesday saying, “Part of co-parenting is creating healthy and honest relationships between the parents. Tripp one day needs to know the truth and needs to know that even if a mistake is made the honorable thing to do is to own up to it.”
Though they had been in a bitter custody battle, Bristol, who recently made her acting debut on ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager, has said she and Johnston want to turn “a new page here as co-parents … and [put] aside the past because doing so is in [our son] Tripp’s best interest.”
Hmm. Bristol, smarten up, honey. That high school sweetheart thing almost never works out in reality.
Anyway, Johnston’s final word on the subject?
“So to the Palin family in general and to Sarah Palin in particular, please accept my regrets and forgive my youthful indiscretion,” Johnston says in the statement. “I hope one day to restore your trust.”
And this is what convinces me more than anything that this apology is both contrived and yet another sign that Sarah Palin will be the Republican candidate for President in the 2012 election. “To Sarah Palin in particular” speaks volumes … and they’re not exactly uncalculated.
So do you think he’s got a shot in Hades of being welcomed back into the Palin fold? Will Sarah keep what many consider to be a bit of slime from dragging her down as 2012 approaches?

We all grow up, right? Sounds like it is his turn.
I’m kinda hoping he’ll be the next Secretary of Defense.
Hahaha that’s fantastic! Maybe he will pose shirtless to, erm, improve international relations.
