In a recent interview with Fox News’ Greta van Susteren, Sarah Palin discusses everything from the BP oil spill to the hoopla over her boobs. But mostly about the oil spill. Yeah, it never would have happened had she been at the helm. Really. That, and Obama should have called her. Like, stat.
I have some ideas, and I think a lot of other Americans have some ideas, especially those who have some experience working with these oil companies and knowing that there is such a need to verify the information that oil execs would be giving a public official because the oil executive’s perception of reality, really, is different than a public official’s would be.
In the case of this spill, to see now that we’re on day 54 and the Obama administration is just now deciding that they will meet with BP is a pretty atrocious thing to have to realize because, Greta, what this has resulted in is an industry player like BP has been put in the position, this player with astronomical liability exposure, gets to define the facts of the spill, instead of from day one, working together, CEO to CEO level, the president and Hayward and board members of BP working together to define what the facts are in this situation.
It’s like one of those New England Telephone ads that was on when I was a kid. A family loads into their station wagon, all excited about going to the aquarium to see the penguins. They arrive only to find that the aquarium has closed, and a voiceover comes on with, “You should have called.” Yup, my interpretation of Sarah Palin’s words here is that Obama should have gotten right on the phone with BP (because I’m sure he didn’t) and worked it out man to man CEO to CEO because, uh, that’s the way things work best. Yup.
VAN SUSTEREN: OK, walk me through this. Suppose that you were in the position as President Obama is, and you’ve invited the CEO and other executives of BP. They walk into the room. Do you ask the questions? Do you issue the orders? Do they ask the questions? What are you going to do?
PALIN: Well, you know, even before walking in the room with BP, some orders need to be issued. For one, there needs to be a waving of the Jones Act so that we could have had many, many days ago, weeks ago, some help with skimmers from elsewhere, besides just U.S. flagships, come over and help in this tragedy. And that order needs to be given to Admiral Allen right now. It’s amazing to me and to so many others that though President Bush had been able to waive Jones Act provisions for Katrina, President Obama hasn’t thought to do that yet? And yet surely, that has been suggested by those experts around him.
Okay, I had to look up what this Jones Act is (it sounds like a pseudonym, doesn’t it?). I have no pride, I went to Wikipedia where I learned that the statute Palin is referring to is actually called The Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (it was sponsored by Washington Senator Wesley Jones) and gives “the workers compensation rights of sailors and the use of foreign vessels in domestic trade.” It was also the third choice on a Wikipedia search behind acts involving the Philippines and Puerto Rico respectively. Yeah, Sarah Palin, I knew that one right off the top of my head …
Palin then moves on to her passion for hunting and killing wildlife and how wildlife indigenous to Alaska has been able to peacefully coexist with the construction and operation of oil pipelines.
When you travel up to Prudhoe Bay, you’re going to see a thriving caribou herd and other wildlife that has a thriving population because, for instance, the pipeline — the trans-Alaska oil pipeline that has been built safely and above ground, so that there are walkways for the animals to crawl under. You’re going to see no adverse impact on wildlife population. In fact, a lot of the caribou herd has been able to increase dramatically since these 30 years have gone by with pipeline construction.
Alaska is very, very cognizant of the fact that the wildlife needs to be protected. So all that we do with on-shore drilling is to make sure that wildlife and the safety of our workers is so incorporated into the plan for development. This is a tragedy, again, as we’re seeing in the gulf, where they did not have the plans to deal with a blow-out under water in such deep depths that now one of the ramifications so negative is the wildlife that will be killed.
Palin also weighed in on Nikki Haley and the fact that she is so obviously going to win South Carolina’s gubernatorial race that it’s pretty much a waste of money to allow voters the chance to decide:
You know, I’m such a proponent of competition, even into a runoff after a primary where Nikki did win handily, and she’s going to win again.
So kind of a waste of resources, but I’m not going to be one to discourage that continued competition, giving him a fair shot. Fine with me if he decides to stay in it, even though, you know, it’s probably going to be a futile effort.
When asked about the fascination with her personal life (including what Palin refers to as “Boobgate”), she responds by once again shifting to the oil spill:
Well, first, Greta, you know why we love you? Because you’re not afraid to ask the questions. And I got to respect you for asking that question because I know that “boobgate” is all over the Internet right now because there are a lot of, I guess, bored, idle bloggers and reporters with nothing else to talk about. And I think some of those folks, too, they need to grab a shovel, go down to the gulf, volunteer to help, clean up and save a whale or something instead of reporting on such stupid things like that.
No, I have not had implants. I can’t believe, yes, that we’re even talking about this. I think a report like that is about as real and truthful as those reports that Todd and I are divorcing or that I bought a place in the Hamptons or that Trigg is not my own child. And we still put up with that kind of garbage, too, in even the mainstream media, Greta. It’s amazing.
So definitely read the full article—it’s pure Palin, and educational and entertaining on a variety of levels. And, uh, it’s clear that she has made a she has not made a decision on whether or not to run in 2012.
Your thoughts on Palin’s latest pearls of, uh, wisdom?

You think its easy going thru life looking like Peggy Hill!
I think the response to the spill has been pretty pathetic, but I’m not sure I would pin that on Obama. It’s BP’s responsibility to control the oil. Just because they douched around for too long doesn’t mean it’s Obama’s fault. However, I realize there are probably plenty of things Obama could have done that didn’t happen; however, I’m not an expert on executive powers and thus have no idea what he could have done better.
Did you blame Katrina on Bush?
It was Ray Nagin(mayor of New Orleans) and the Governor of Louisiana that dropped the ball on Katrina. That gusher has me scared silly!
It was the citizens of New Orleans that dropped the ball on New Orleans.
You built a city below sea level in a major hurricane path. You had a test run the year before when a C5 storm rolled in, but thankfully jogged off west just before landfall.
You were warned to leave, that it was unsafe to stay. You stayed.
And you complain that it’s all the government’s fault you were in trouble?

Once upon a tme Greta was a well respected journalist, in the true sense of the word (a sharp reporter armed w/facts) now she’s been absorbed into the Palin Family Circus, and been reduced to commentating on the latest Palin antics. “Well, first, Greta, you know why we love you? Because you’re not afraid to ask the questions.”
Was she trying to be funny here? I can never tell. Apparently the chat they were having 3 seconds before that about the oil spill wasn’t important because “THE questions” are about her boobs. Fox is such a POS network and all their tv personalities are morons.
I suspect it was a joke on ‘well, at least you’re direct’.
The reason Sarah brought up the Jones Act has to do with the Norwegian and Dutch governments offering their boom ships to help with clean up. They were offered on day two,and refused because it would have violated the rules implemented by the unions through the Jones Act,the unions won and the people of the gulf lost, and Barry Obama didn’t have the balls to suspend it. Bullshit!
