This is, of course, not the first time Heidi has been covered in “sauce”, but she did usher in the precursor of “sexual chocolate” last year when this original commercial for 1848 emerged. Now, the rash of sexy chocolate ads that have been popping up lately join the ranks of Heidi-like chocolate stardom.
While chocolate ads directed at women are in no way new (I remember the Hershey’s Sweet Escapes commercials from my early childhood, which displayed women’s brains as being comprised of chocolate, shoes and love), recently there seems to be a plethora, many of them pitching chocolate as not only desirable, but sensual. Perhaps these advertisers are merely trying to give women what they want, considering the new study that says many women prefer chocolate to sex, but I think there is potentially a different angle that these advertisers are trying to play.
In most of these advertisements, the women are usually single, professional types. This leads me to believe that these advertisers are deliberately trying to exploit the stereotype that unmarried women over thirty are depressed that they don’t have a man and therefore must take comfort in chocolate. There has of course been a lot of debate recently about the plight of the unmarried single woman (especially if she happens to be black) and how unhappy she supposedly is. While many women may in fact be unhappy (likely along with many men, since there is a lot to be glum about in today’s economy), it seems highly doubtful that women just want to stuff themselves with Tina Fey’s Brownie Husband whenever they feel upset.
So, I call B.S. on this. What do you think? Dying for a cocoa facial?

I, personally, am a ravenous chocoholic. I actually went out at 1:00 AM this morning and spent $20.00 on the most decadent raspberry chocolate chambord cake you’ve ever seen.
However, I’m also getting married in three months. So, it’s not as if I’m using chocolate as a substitute for a sex life. Although, it does definitely get me in the mood ^_^
P.S.:
And sadly, my brain IS largely comprised of chocolate, shoes, and love–with some literature and video games thrown in for good measure.
It does seem to trivialize women a bit,and their problems. But they have been doing it to men for years, advertisers have played us as vacuous neanderthals for years. Most of us laugh.
Great, now I am craving a hot fudge sundae.
I actually am not much of a fan of chocolate (I much prefer fruity candy), so give me sex any day.
i love chocolate and i´d rather have sex
I’ve never been a chocolate lover, so I’ve never really understood the women+chocolate=love thing. I mean, it’s tasty, but I’m with Erin on this one, I’d rather have sex.
I don’t like chocolate (except for white chocolate which last I heard isn’t really chocolate) but I am a fool over suckers.
I have to say that I am a bona fide chocolate whore. I would sell my body for chocolate at certain points, I think.
Sounds like you could use a couple of things, chocolate, and a good business manager.
