Before I even begin, I urge you to follow up your perusal of this post with a reading of the harrowing Economist article I’m drawing information from.

This year, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences “showed what can happen to a country when girl babies don’t count.” The one-child policy in that nation has led to sex-selective abortion and infanticide — not to mention high suicide rates among young women who cannot bear living with the guilt. CASS says within 10 years one out of every five Chinese men will be unable to find a bride (assuming he wants one) because of the sexual discrepancy of individuals presently 19 years old and younger.

According to CASS, China in 2020 will have 30m-40m more men of this age than young women. For comparison, there are 23m boys below the age of 20 in Germany, France and Britain combined and around 40m American boys and young men. So within ten years, China faces the prospect of having the equivalent of the whole young male population of America, or almost twice that of Europe’s three largest countries …

Beyond the stomach-turning truths mentioned above, another hazard of such a large young male population is an increase in crime: “A rising population of frustrated single men spells trouble.” According to the article, crime in China has nearly doubled over the past 20 years, “with stories abounding of bride abduction, the trafficking of women, rape and prostitution.” A study found that mismatched gender ratios were responsible for one-seventh of that hike.

Supposedly “governments are doing more than it ever did to persuade people to treat girls equally (through anti-discrimination laws and media campaigns).” Let’s hope so.

That’s insane. Nothing good comes from large-scale demographics-tampering like this.

I actually don’t totally disagree with China’s one-child only policy, since I remember reading that a couple may adopt children in addition to their single biological child (I guess since the children already exist, there’s no reason to say no). What bothers me is that this gender favoritism exists in the first place.

It’s not about gender equality, it’s about the fact that traditionally, the sons provide for their parents in old age. Having sons for thes people is like social security. The government should be trying to fix that shit instead of seeing it as an equality issue. And Erin, you’re right about the adoption thing- only problem is that the orphanages are filled with…. girls.

    • rhonda says:

Exactly. Sons are insurance, daughters are an expense. It’s not that people just don’t like girls, I’m sure there are plenty of Chinese women who would dearly love a daughter but they have to aim for a son.

  4. Nat says:

I like how the solution presented to rising male crime is to just give them more women to placate them. Let’s TOTALLY pretend like it’s just natural for “young frustrated men” to commit crimes and inflict atrocities on women, and focus on how THEY don’t have enough willing women to keep them busy. Let’s not, like, condemn those actions and make sure they have some kind of sense of morality and responsibility by the time they’re old enough to have a wife or anything.

And despite all that boys are still so valuable that mothers are willing to murder there daughters in vast numbers. KINDA EXPLAINS YOUR ANGER.

The thing that is hugely disturbing to me is that in the Economist piece, they say that these trends are not limited to China. This isn’t just a by-product of the one-family-one-child law. It is a cultural problem that transcends borders. From the original Economist article:

“Even subsets of America’s population are following suit, though not the population as a whole.”

    • Jess says:

But you don’t specifically see Americans killing newborns because of the sex of the child, maybe there are those who use IVF and opt for gender selection but that’s not the same thing. Besides, IVF is expenisve… most lower income families (who clearly outnumber the IVF users) either set a limit of children their family can afford, or foolishly continue to try for just one more child of the desired sex. I don’t really forsee America having this as an issue in the future. At any rate, I got my 1 girl and 1 boy and I love them as individuals and each one with all my heart. Can’t fathom the mindset that pits your own financial well being against the future and life of a child you have brought into this world… pretty sick…

    • Kai says:

Let me guess, the subsets that come from the countries where it happens back home? I welcome them to the cultural influence of a society that can perhaps curb these problems.

As for multitudes of sexually frustrated young men, THAT is a problem everywhere. Historically, many issues have been with countries having an abundance of men with nothing to live for.

It’s not that they aren’t responsible for their actions, and that they shouldn’t be held accountable. They are and should.

It’s simply a recognition that bad things usually follow when you have too many young men. and they need to be prepared.
