I have never been what you would call a Louis Vuitton fan.  I kind of gag when I see women boarding planes with an arsenal of unnecessary lugged emblazoned with the I-consider-to-be-tacky LV insignia.  For fuck’s sake, they even make dog carriers for Vuitton, but I digress.
Mark Jacobs, creator of Louis Vuitton releases this year’s non-Louis Vuitton spring line and I have to say … pretty much everything I viewed, I’d wear.  I generally don’t pay too much attention to the overly swanky fashion niche named “haute couture”, but Jacobs opened my eyes with this line.

For a feminist site, you’re probably wondering the relevancy at this point, no?  I know I’d be, especially as a self-proclaimed Louis Vuitton-boycotter.  I’ll give it to you flat: this is the first line of clothing that I’ve seen in a long, long time that didn’t have see-through boob slots, thigh-high slits that expose emaciated hipbones and chain mail-like mesh.  Haute couture was a little haute for someone like me who scours antique boutiques and thrift shops for the edgiest, most retro fashions available.  I think it’s pretty sweet that fashion is coming full circle again and is becoming universally appealing — and is also avoiding the pitfalls of clothing designed for overly-slender, 6-foot-tall women who won’t wear the garbage they’re modeling anyway.

I always had a penchant for retro, vintage pieces and this particular line, well … Gear it on up, Jacobs, I’ve got some spending to do.

Check out the pics in the photo gallery and tell me if this stuff is actually stuff that you, as a “normal” woman, would wear.

Mark me down as a strong NO to if I would wear this.

  2. Heather says:

I love everything Marc Jacobs (I currently own 5 bags) and I love silhouettes in this new line. Unfortunately I don’t think I’m tall enough to pull off below-the-knee skirts =[

There are some wacky elements (that weird pom-pom fabric skirt for one) but for the most part the look is classy and elegant. If I could pull it off I would totally wear it.

He’s got a late fifties early sixties type feel in his designs, looks like my mom when I came home from little league.

Well, for starters, they are all skirts and dresses – which I don’t wear. But I decided to look at it like ‘imagine I needed a skirt/dress for something’.

And no, I would never wear anything like this. I think my grandmother might have worn the skirts…
The dresses are all just damn ugly, froofy things.

But then, I’m not exactly a ‘normal woman’ coming in on this..

I like the black dress a lot (third row, middle picture). The one above it is godawful, though.

This stuff is actually incredibly wearable, coming from a high fashion designer. I find haute couture very interesting to look at, but usually I’m not viewing it as something I would ever wear. It’s more like art that you stuck on a chain-link fence/model.

The green plaid one is really cute. I’d love to have these but in the end I would never wear them. I tend to stay in my pajamas all day.
