Traditionally, when you think of a street gang, you think of men. Well, I mean, I do, at any rate. I know it’s not unfathomable to consider the notion that many women do participate in these types of organizations, but it’s one of those societal stereotypes that automatically prompts me to associate gangs with men.
However, proof is on the rise that gangs aren’t just seeking men nowadays. A study comes forth from New Jersey regarding statistics indicating that women are being inducted into gangs these days and by nefarious methods: being “sexed” in or being beaten as a means of belonging.
Gangs nowadays are also seeking the straight-A student for a more thought-out ploy: the girl joins the gang and then proceeds to act as a double-agent, securing a job in law enforcement and assisting the gang effort from the inside. Nancy Petrara-Stafyleras, a detective for one of the Jersey areas’ precincts, states:
“Gang leaders are trying to get girls into law enforcement, to infiltrate police and other law enforcement agencies. They want the girls also in business, to get degrees and get jobs in banking. They’re looking for straight-A students.”
Gangs, one way or another, are a frightening idea to behold. Whether it’s males or females promoting the violence perpetuated by gangs is neither here nor there — the violence in either case has to stop. Sometimes it amazes me to see how far we, as a society, have come but then something like this arises and you’re once again reminded about the very concrete fact of gang existence on home soil and that their numbers always on the rise.

I have to admit that it’s rather funny that women are the people they want to be educated. I guess they’re taking advantage of the current college graduation trend?
The way these women are inducted into gangs is horrible though, I just saw part of a documentary about it. Is there any way for gang rape to really be consensual?
I agree! That’s crazy.
However I could see such things happening in my hometown.
On the other hand, I am in college and…can’t imagine…if i was approached by a gang member/leader that I would be much help to them since I’m studying to have a career in education…..:\
But really the educated part…why can’t the guys do it, wtf mate :P
I suspect it is not that men can’t. It’s that women are often not as useful in the physical side of things, and can fly under the radar better in potentially suspicious scenarios.
Hence the Moscow underground terrorist widows…
Gangs aren’t anything new… I’m Spanish, and we have a lot of South American immigration in big cities over here. I was born and raised in a big city myself (Valencia), and when I was in high school, most South American students were in a gang or in its group of “followers” – apparently they were part of the Latin Kings, which is the biggest Latin gang and has members in South America, the States and Spain. We all knew about how they had attacked someone, and how the girls had to have sex with several members of the gang in order to be accepted in it. We laughed at them though, it’s hard not to when you’re usually taller than most South American guys and they dress with oversized clothes. Nothing to laugh about when they grow up, though.
I’m not sure though the gang’s plans will work, usually when one is educated they tend to grow out of such environments.
Do you like paella?
I prefer eels with potatoes, but yeah, paella will do the trick. My nan’s paella is amazing I must add.
Eels with potatoes? Sounds like a gardening problem.
Not many people appreciate them outside sunny Valencia.
mmmm

Pssstt….I just looked at that picture. You really eat that? :)
I think it looks yummy.
I think if it was shellfish it would look yummy.
I don’t eat the kind with scales.
Eels don’t have scales ;) and yeah whenever I come back from Uni my mum is like, what do you want to eat? And I just have this in mind haha
Some local foods are just funny. Where I come from, they make a minced meat “hedgehog”. It’s basically raw minced meat in hedgehog shape (and no, it’s not hedgehog meat :P). You just eat it on rolls. (Well, I didn’t…always refused to eat it…)

Woman, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger! Spanish jamón and Italian carpaccio are raw meat, and sushi is raw fish! Nom nom nom might be because I’m a food-deprived student but seriously I’d give it a go.
One of my favorite foods as a kid was sheep brains on toast. I don’t believe they can sell that anymore, mad cow disease and all. When I think of half the stuff I ate as a kid it’s just revolting. I loved white pudding suppers which is basically lard mixed with oats which is then battered and deep fried in more lard along with fries cooked in lard too. Haggis too, battered and deep fried. If you can dip something in batter and deep fry it there’s a fair chance I ate it as a kid. FYI, you can’t batter and deep fry Skittles because they will sink and result in very costly damage and job loss.
Yay for Scotland :D I love morcilla, which is black pudding – the skin of a sheep’s intestine with blood and onion inside. Sounds disgusting and it’s delicious, my mum would send them to me on the post when I lived in Manchester :D
Mmm, I always loved black pudding too. I once had a Spanish guy cook me a meal, some dish with lentils and black pudding and other stuff. I worked one summer on a farm with a bunch of people from all over Europe, so much fun. We did a party one night where all the nationalities cooked stuff from their countries. Spanish omelets and crepes with Nutella and a bunch of eastern european stuff that I can’t remember now.
We did a field trip to Ireland in college and for breakfast every morning we got toast, black pudding, white pudding, bacon, sausage, and a fried egg. The Irish sure do like their processed meat products. ;-)
Spanish omelets, YES – yesterday mum made a massive one, so good! Unfortunately today I’m back at Uni and I’m only having beans on toast… but tonight my friends and I are having pancake night with nutella and sugar and lemon :D
Irish food is goooood, Irish stew is amazing.
Us of scandinavian descent eat a type of blood pudding also, blood klub. Its sliced of a large sausage like tube and fried, looks kind of like a large scab on your plate, yummy. Look at me,its only sunday and already I’m fishing for a Zinger!!
@ Joey: Oh yeah. Forgot ‘Blutwurst’ (German)/ ‘Blodpølse’ (Danish). My grandma makes that. As well as another dish, which is cooked blood.
@ rhonda: Somehow I think you could get that at my grandma’s as well. The vet always has to chek the animals before they get the knife…
(My grandma’s family lives on a farm – in case anybody was wondering :P)
Lots of this type of food finds itself in the realty that they just couldn’t afford to throw anything away.
Mmmh yeah lots of dishes are in fact that, just food people couldn’t afford to throw away indeed.
Yup. I mean, my grandma had two kids right after WWII (and in the Russion zone, no less). So that was definately not the time to be picky (btw. trying to discuss healthy eating with that woman is impossible as well…).
Oh yeah, and not to speak of the generations of poor farmworkers, etc. before that.
Haha my grandparents lived the Spanish Civil War, concentration camps, the food-rationing times and the following forty years, so up to this day they keep all leftovers in the fridge. Mind you, even my dad feels bad when he doesn’t finish off the food on his plate (and thus I feel bad too…). I also have friends from Yugoslavia so they also keep their food, they still remember the war in the Balkans, scary stuff.
I can’t even fathom why anyone, let alone women, would want to be in gangs….
have you seen Flight of the Conchords and their gang? We could have a gang – the Zeldas. And as entry you have to get grammatically beaten in.
I would totally be in a gang – I like breaking the law. No-one has ever asked me though. I could cook for them.
And, like, be their lawyer
O’m already in it then- Blurry beat the hell out of me…
It’s my job.
I had to make certain that you were tough enough.
