That’s what you can find out with the BBC’s Sex I.D. test. Nope, mind and body don’t always conform. Salon.com’s Tracy Clark-Flory recently took the six-part test and found that her brain does in fact match her bits:

My brain is female – very female, according to the BBC’s Sex I.D. test. I’m empathetic and able to accurately read people’s emotions. I’m attuned to changes in my environment, but suck at spatial judgment. I use words, lots of them. Therefore, the complex bundle of neurons and synapses in my skull can be essentialized as female — a pink brain, a cranial stereotype.

It sounds like a glorified Cosmo quiz, I know, but as it happens, the I.D. test is based in actual science — just like Match.com’s personality test, Clark-Flory notes. Still, the essence of sex or gender is never that simple, so even though the test has scientific research on its side, it may not be quite what it puffs itself up to be, that is:

The implication is that the test reveals the most innate, defining characteristic of your mind, the thing that makes you you.

If you have the time to take the approximately 20-minute  test, I hope you’ll post your results in the comments section — I’m interested to know if you agree or are surprised. I’ll be doing the same just as soon as I can figure out which of my browsers will support the damn thing.

so…basically i’m just good at spatial stuff, and that makes me kinda male-ish. it was a fun test!

  4. Copa says:

Not going to go into everything on the test but I got a 0 apparently I have no mental gender.

I’m more of a reader than a commenter on this site, but I just had to share my results.

I got zero. So I’m not really sure what I am. A brain hermaphrodite? Haha.

I think I’ve done this one before sometime.
And I think it sucks. I’ve seen a number of these things, and I think this one is pretty poor. the preference for faces? I never find any of the faces attractive – where’s that option. And the slight change in jaw definition is just too easy a code to crack.

I never understand the eyes one either, meaning apparently I just got really lucky. I don’t even understand how most of the possibilities would have an expression. They had such subtle differences. Silly.

I’m an extremist. My systemizing is fairly high, my empathizing is abysmal. I was awful at both the angles and the moved objects – more awful than average for either gender, despite the two being on different sides. Mental rotating, on the other hand, I kicked the ass of both men and women. I seemed to be never with either average – always either really good or really bad.

Regardless of my issues, the test comes out reasonably correct. I don’t agree with a ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine’ brain, but I do agree that there are differences, and men tend to be on one end, and women the other. And I am an anomaly, who always tests off where it’s mostly men. This does not surprise me, nor would it surprise anyone who knows me.

    other fun stuff:
    Analyze who writes your website:
    http://genderanalyzer.com/?url=http://zeldalily.com
They are 66% confident that ZeldaLily is written by a woman.
My website, on the other hand, they’re pretty sure is written by a man. Again, unsurprising.

This is my favourite website on this stuff:
    http://eqsq.com/
It doesn’t try to categorize as male and female. It divides the population into empathizers and systemizers, with a balance in the middle, and degrees of extreme to each end.
They address that women are more often empathizers, and men systemizers, but note that all people are different.
    I quite like their scale.
It also entertains me greatly. It’s based on the balance between the two scores, not the raw of either. Once again, due to my complete lack of balance, I come out as an ‘Extreme Systemizer’ – the end of the scale. I’m so far out, they don’t even believe my existence – the averages have 0% of women as ESs, and only a few percent of men.

They also have an awesome blog on the tendency differences between men and women, and actual decent reporting on pay comparisons.

    Stupid test,I’m American,I don’t have a metric ruler.

    • Inesita says:

The funny thing is that the British don’t usually use the metric system either. Guess they used it on the BBC site because there are more people using it all over the world. Just an educated guess, don’t have facts.

      • rhonda says:

The British do use the metric system for almost everything. They still measure roads distances in miles but any time you buy anything it’s going to be measured in grams. There are still plenty of old timers who think in inches and feet but it’s been decades since that stuff was taught in school. Back in the 80’s the only time we learned about imperial measurement in school was when we went on a field trip to a Victorian class room as part of a history project.

        • Kai says:

In Canada we are taught 100% metric. Meanwhile, our parents are measuring things in inches. As children, we might be good with the metric. But once you leave school, and no longer have that influence, it drops off greatly. Most people end up somewhat mangled.
I measure small distances in imperial – the room is 8 feet, slide the picture over a few inches, etc. But I measure long distances in metric – the trip will be 25km of hiking, with a 900m elevation gain, etc.
I know air temperatures in celcius (25degrees is a hot day!), but water temperatures in fahrenheit (78 is an average pool).
I don’t know a single person who knows their weight in kilograms – I would have to check my driver’s license.
And of course, being Canadians, we measure driving distances in neither system, but in hours.
I think this random adoption is typical.

        • Inesita says:

I’ve never heard anyone using it when I spent time there…I lived in Kent for a few months. It all was foot, inch, miles, stones and other stuff that I always had to convert. That’s why I thought they don’t use it much.

I thought it was funny that they used the metric system in India…before I worked there for some months I thought they run the same system as the British.

But hey, you learn something new all the time.

        • Inesita says:

@Kai: Random question: Your weight is on your driver’s licence? Why?

        • rhonda says:

As I say, there are plenty of people who still use them in conversation but officially everything is metric. Personally if I’m measuring something just for me I use metric but I estimate better in inches and of course I needed to learn all the conversions (best argument for metric ever IMO) when I moved to the US. Weighing in stones amuses me since the UK seems to be the only country that actually uses them nowadays.

Some states and Canada (at least part of it, not sure) puts weight on drivers licenses as part of the identifying info along with hair color, eye color, and of course a photo. I guess it’s to make them more tamper proof or something.

        • Inesita says:

Hehe, the weight on driver’s licencss wouldn’t work in Germany. There your license doesn’t expire. You only have to get a new one, when the police can’t identify you from the picture anymore. My dad never got a new license after the wall came down in Germany, so he always drove around with his GDR license – also abroad.

        • Vchilds says:

That was always a joke here in the US. Women would always lie about their weight on their drivers licence. In my state you dont have to renew your drivers licence for 35 years or such. I was just informed by a TSA agent that even though my licence is good forever, my picture on it is only good for 12 years. Go figure.

        • Kai says:

Stones are a bloody weird measure. I’m pretty sure the British are the only users.

Canadian DLs list sex, birthdate, eye colour, hair colour, height, and weight.
Though you must renew your license every 5 years (money grab), you are not required to update this – probably unless the registry guy looks at you and thinks something is way off. They also don’t check – height and weight are self-reported, and printed unless seeming so far off as to need challenging.
But I know what I weighted when I got my driver’s, so i can use the weight as a conversion starting point. :)

Really high on empathy and the eye thing, pretty good with 3-D, and according to the test, I have no interest in systematics. I think I got a 2 out of 20 on that one. hehe

  15. It apparently thinks me (a 22 year old chemical engineering student female) is 50% male. Hmm… and my ring fingers are longer than my index fingers (due to increased amounts of testosterone?). Maybe that’s why I’m so competitive. And I apparently like feminine faces… which makes sense, cause I leaned towards faces that look more like my s/o (who I think is cute, intelligent, and all that, but he looks 4 years younger than me… when he actually 2 years older. hehe. I don’t care that he can’t grow a proper mustache or beard.)

    I’m a (mostly) straight female.

got about a 25 on the male side, and I’m not too surprised, although I expected a more androgynous result. I would’ve been a bit surprised if I were more on the female side.

  17. tjgoldstein says:

I’ve done this test before, along with both my housemates.

Me – bi girl – tested as overtly male despite my love of pink, French Chateau decor and anything glittery/frilly/shiney. I tell ya, I got more pink shite than Barbie!

Housemate 1 – gay girl – tested as extremely feminine despite her preference as the ‘butch’ one in her relationship, has never worn a skirt and can outswear a mine worker in 2 minutes.

Housemate 2 – straight male – tested as being on the cusp of male/female despite being your average aussie ocker bloke. Think Steve Irwin with a bad moustache and a constant supply of Valium.

Needless to say, we did the whole thing again as we were sure we had stuffed it all up somehow. But no, first results were the right ones.
