Huh. Kind of twisted subject matter from Monday’s Slate.com’s “Explainer” column: Can women lead an Islamist terror group?
Of course the question was prompted by the attack on Moscow’s subway system Monday morning, when two female suicide bombers killed at least 35 people.
Slate’s Brian Palmer writes that there no leading ladies in any of the “major” Islamic terrorist organizations, but cites a quote from al-Qaida’s Ayman al-Zawahiri, who said that there are “no women in the group, but that the domestic service of a jihadist’s wife is heroic.”
As for female bombers, apparently many of them are sent out with — wow, it feels weird to even be writing this — insufficient training and little direction. There are other functions, though, for jihadist women:
Many are involved in recruiting and indoctrination—Noralwizah Lee Abdullah, the wife of Indonesian terror chief Hambali, became active in this field when her husband went into exile. Women also appear to have written for al Khansa, the now-defunct al-Qaida Web magazine for women.
“Women in the al-Qaida family” are often used for political marriages. Yep, like you heard about those crazy, collar-wearing Europeans doing. Back in history class. Or on The Tudors. Except instead of “strengthening ties” between England and Spain, these marriages strengthen ties for terrorist organizations of different regions. Osama Bin Laden and Mullah Omar seem to have married each other’s daughters, according to the article.
In almost any other situation I’d be objecting to the clear inequality here, but for obvious reasons (uh, willing terrorists of either sex suck), I’m going to leave off where I started: Twisted column, man.

Huh.
Yeah, that’s all I’ve got.

So….what? Are we supposed to be all outraged because they aren’t equal to men in the terrorism world?
I think so. It is a symptom of the oppression of women in these societies and shows that they’re considered less than men. They’re not even good enough to blow themselves up for the cause, clearly they’re far from equal. Still, it’s probably a good thing for these women in the long run!
Well, you’ll have to excuse me if I find it difficult to muster up much sympathy for them.
Yeah, I don’t exactly have sympathy for them either. Just speculating as to why this story was posted.
Yeah, that’s definitely why I closed with:
“In almost any other situation I’d be objecting to the clear inequality here, but for obvious reasons (uh, willing terrorists of either sex suck), I’m going to leave off where I started: Twisted column, man.”
I’m interested in the lives of women everywhere, and that’s why I posted the article, but the last thing I’m going to do is be outraged for willing members of groups that clearly have little-to-no regard for human life of either gender.
I normally don’t comment in blogs but yours I truly like. Is it a custom-built design or a template.
