An interesting video piece by MSNBC on the sport of women’s ski-jumping. It’s one of the few Olympic sports that men compete in but not women — despite the fact that a woman, Lindsay Van, currently holds the distance record on the world championship course. (Anyone else notice that all the stand-outs in women’s skiing are named Lindsey or Lindsay? What’s in a name?)
The women behind the sport have pushed for decades to have it included at the Olympic level but continue to be denied. They claim it’s because the men are intimidated by the competitiveness of the women in the sport, and the IOC President even went on the record stating that the sport was, perhaps, not safe for the female body. The IOC claims that the women’s version of the sport isn’t “ready” yet.

Why do they need to make a female version? Is it not exactly the stinking same?
Maybe if women ski jumpers competed in bikinis like the sand volleyball teams, there would be so much interest that they’d have to include it in the olympics. Of course they’d have to have heated areas before and after the jump but if they’re young and strong they could deal with a momentary chill.

I am livid over this.
Watch the end of the video, too. The head of the IOC (I think he is, or at least for the Vancouver games) Boldly stated that it would be remembered who caused the IOC “all that trouble” for the 2010 games.
He was referring to the m being taken to court over excluding women.
The judge in the case made an excellent point – he asked how the IOC would react if the word “women” were replaced with “black” or any other group if they would still feel justified in excluding them from competition.
Seriously, this makes my blood boil.
I’m also pissed that they moved the women down to the “junior” section of the luge track. I was looking forward to the men and women competing on the same track for once.
I KNOW! Infuriating. I have no words to describe how angry I am about this completely STUPID injustice.
?
They are on the same track – just from a lower starting point. As it was always intended to be, right or wrong. They moved the men down to the women’s start, and the women down further. How is that different from the original stagger?
It’s not different. That’s the annoying part. I was looking forward to seeing what would happen when they started from the same point.
So the top of the track is too dangerous. That shouldn’t mean the women can’t start from the place they were going to originally. They only moved it so that the men and women wouldn’t be doing the same run. That is annoying.
Ohhh, you mean that you would have liked to see the men moved to the womens, and the women remain there.
gotcha.
Well, I would like to remove the gender parts altogether – let it truly be the best in the world. But of course, then there’d be very few women, and that is considered unacceptable. So in most sports, women have a separate easier category. Unfortunate, perhaps, but I’m used to it.
Especially with men now saying they don’t like the lower start because it’s slower and all, you’d think it would have been okay to just leave both there, but I suppose they’re accustomed to different levels.
Refuckingdiculous is all I have to say about this and the luge thing.

This is asinine. There is absolutely no reason why women should not be allowed to participate. It’s stuff like this that reminds me why I generally refuse to watch the Olympics.
Seriously. And I was kind of looking forward to watching it this year. NEVERMIND!
Does this “Dick Pound” character have a wife? Or a daughter? If so, they each need to slap some sense into his degrading, discriminatory head. What an asshole. How can this be construed as anything OTHER than blatant discrimination???
I did burst out laughing though, when the woman said “Are our uteruses going to fall out?”

They often *claim* that it’s because the sport of women’s ski jumping isn’t big enough for Olympic competition.
Of course, one of the things that really expands a sport and gives incentives to newcomers is the ability to push for the Olympics. The world circuit just doesn’t draw the same attention.
Personally, I like watching the women compete just as much, if not more, than the men in certain sports. Women athletes bodies are incredible and watching them perform piques my interest (especially in form fitting apparel:))
nice way to put it
the skaters piqued my interest as well last night
