This past week’s events, collectively known as “Sex Week” at Yale University, had a lot of positive response from its attendees.  The event’s main speaker was Maryann Abbott, who is a project director for the Multi-Level Female Condom Project at the Institute for Community Research and a colleague, Mary Price, was another key speaker who discussed the topics of Female Condom use.

Abbott stated sobering statistics:  women are far likelier to become infected with a sexually-transmitted disease (most notably HIV/AIDS).  Her main aim this past week was to educate women on the options that they, as women, could take upon themselves to utilize in order to do their part in preventing disease.

The use of microbicides to synonymously attempt to eradicate STIs along with standard prophylactics turned out to be a hot topic.  microbicides, if you’re unaware, can be an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, or an antibiotic compound and can be used for varying reasons — now, most notably, HIV prevention.  While trials are still ongoing, scientists believe that certain microbicides can and will be available to the public as an option to combat sexually-transmitted infections. The most recent studies show that microbicides are approximately thirty percent effective.

The Female Condom 1 and 2 were also discussed.  Most attendees stated that they had, indeed, used the female condom and were impressed with the results of the FC2 as opposed to the FC1.  Women stated that the FC2 had a less invasive squeaking noise and was more comfortable to wear.  The Female Condom’s second edition can also be inserted into the vagina up to eight hours prior to intercourse.  Mary Price states that many men don’t even “notice” the inserted polyurethane-type condom.

Price also stated that awareness on the topic of Female Condom use is a necessity and claims her aim is to supply education and “provide alternatives for women who cannot convince their partners to wear a condom.” … And at that I cringe.  What the hell is a woman doing with a partner who refuses to wear a condom upon her request?  While it’s evident that such things happen, this is a women’s awareness conference — shouldn’t a little feminism be injected into this particular agenda, or hell, even a little more self-awareness in a relationship role?

Regardless, I think it’s a fabulous thing that discussions such as these are upheld and revered in the public arena and that this information is readily available to women (and men) in every varying circumstance.  While I’m sure Yale U made it a priority to educate their student body on the varying degrees of personal, sexual protection, I can also appreciate the fact that they’ve also made it a personal goal to inform people at disadvantages about sex ed and make them privy to this information as well.  Seems like Yale’s got a nice, well-rounded lot of information that could definitely be of some use to the public — namely women.   Sex Week was open to the public as of this past Friday and will remain in session until Sunday, February 14th — appropriately Valentine’s Day.

Well, I guess the more effective options there are, the better.

  2. Blurry says:

They can put this in up to 8 hours before use?

My understanding is that it is designed to extend from the body?

I’m thinking about that tell tale crackle when you walk(yes, I’m exaggerating!), not to mention the heat rash…

But yes, I agree with Whit – options are great.

  3. Lady Goo Goo says:

This is a serious question – can anyone think of a contraception that is not : the pill, depro provera, the ring thing, an IUD, anything with latex, vinyl or spermicide or going up the butt?

    • Blurry says:

They have new implants out now, Lady – similar to Norplant.A couple of my friends from Europe have it and they’re quite happy with it.

    • Joey says:

Why has the world become obsessed with sex in the poop shoot,it sucks!

      • Vchilds says:

Psst….Joey, the “other” thing that’s not supposed to be
        “sex” sucks, not this…..

        • Blurry says:

          He’s a guy, Vchilds.

          You always need to clarify.

        • Joey says:

I’m pretty open minded, except for the fudge packin! Jeez,I’m even gross-en myself out.

        • Blurry says:

          I don’t understand it, either.

Wait – I can understand it in a homosexual relationship. It makes sense because of the proximity of the male prostrate gland and it’s role in male orgasm.

          But, I don’t have one.
And, I don’t want anyone attempting to massage it because it is not there.

    • Rhonda says:

There’s natural family planning, taking your temperature and such. It’s pretty effective when done properly, almost as effective as the pill.

      • Alzaetia says:

It’s time again for my favorite joke,
“What do you call women who use the rhythm method? Mothers!”

It’s a joke that I was personally the butt of. And I was even able to laugh at it. When I was done crying…

        • rhonda says:

The rhythm method and natural family planning aren’t the same thing. Rhythm method assumes a 28 day cycle with ovulation at day 14 which is only true for a small minority of women. Natural family planning involves taking your temperature and you can monitor other signs like cervical position and mucus to make it even more accurate. If anyone wants to learn about this stuff I recommend Taking Charge of Your Fertility, I forget the author.

      • Jess says:

Withdrawl alone can be up to 93% effective. I bet if you coupled it with the Rythm method, you up your odds even better.

Just don’t try these methods while drunk. My daughter was concieved after a night of Adios Mother F-ers and Red Headed Sluts. Totally thought my husband was going to pull out… I had warned him the oven was pre-heated earlier in the day. I was like “did you just cum?!” He was like, “Uh, yeah… why?!” I told him “Whatever, I’m pregnant now, that’s all, start thinking of names…”

      • Copa says:

I just have a quick question, how does the natural planning work so well when sperm survives for days?

Not that I plan to try it because I believe in the bc pills plus a condom way of life but I am a curious one.

        • Jess says:

You don’t have sex for 3 days before and 3 days after. (10 days total) And if you withdrawl the whole time there isn’t alot of sperm to worry about. It worked for 2 years for my husband and I before we got drunk…

        • Copa says:

Huh, fair enough but now I want to know about Rhonda’s temperature method and how it works with the long lasting spermies.

        • rhonda says:

You have to chart your temps to find out when you ovulate then abstain from sex or use protection for the few days per month around when you ovulate. Check out fertilityfriend DOT com, that’s a pretty good resource. It’s a bit of a commitment, you need to take your temp every morning as soon as you wake before you get out of bed and chart it, but it’s a good option for people who can’t use other methods or who are morally or religiously opposed to contraception.

    • Lady Goo Goo says:

I have gone to three seperate doctors for help, I cant use hormones, allegic to vinyal and latex and the whole butt thing scares me! I can go on the normal pill, but not when I am breastfeeding, which means spermicides are out too.

Because I don’t have a regular cycle the rythm method is very hit and miss.

      • Copa says:

Trojan makes a natural lamb skin condom, it won’t protect you from STDs but it will from pregnancy, they are pricey though just a warning. Just curious but how does spermicide harm breast-milk?

        • Lady Goo Goo says:

Spermicide has been found to get into breastmilk, although they don’t know what the effects are. Still I cant imagine they are good – it is a toxin. So anyone breastfeeding should really avoid condoms with spermicide.

        • Joey says:

Naturalamb are worth the extra money, won’t know your wearing one.

      • Jess says:

Paragard is an IUD that uses copper, no hormones. I’m a breastfeeder too so that’s what I use. Google fertility calculator, you can adjust it for the length of your cycles but you need to be regular for it to work.

        • Lady Goo Goo says:

I tried to get an IUD and got knocked back because of my propensity for heavy menstrual flow. The other new one has hormones that regulate your menstrual flow – I cannot use hormones or I have a serious reation that requires hospitalization.

the lambskin condom might be the way to go….

          I miss my normal pill.

        • Jess says:

Silphium was an ancient herb the romans used to extinction for contraception. It had little or no side effects and was so important medicinally they put it on coins. Damn the Romans!

      • Blurry says:

        I’m thinking you’re a baby machine.

Seriously, though. I had an IUD, sounds similar to what Jess is talking about. I think it was called a Copper 7.

I loved it. I had the same thing – heavy flow after childbirth. The best thing is that after 5 or 6 months – this changed to very light.

Good luck, dear. Or let me know where you’re registered lol.
