And no, naturally, not on their female counterparts. Come on, let’s be realistic, here!
An eight percent increase is said to have occurred between 2008 and 2009 in male breast reduction surgeries. Clearly the male media image is now trickling downhill to the male commoners of the world and they’re finally doing something about it.
The ‘moob’ fad is quickly becoming obsolete — men are not hitting the gyms to firm up their pecs, they’re going under the knife instead. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons report that approximately 581 male breast reduction surgeries were completed last year, which is a significant difference from the previous year of only 323 surgeries. Not only are men trying to rid their bodies of ‘moobs’, they’re also having rhinoplasties and tidying up done around the eyes, too.
According to research specialist Rajiv Grover:
“Many men are feeling the pressure from men’s magazines that weren’t even being published five or six years ago …”
As much as this sucks for humanity — clearly no one can age “gracefully” (read: without surgery) and it’s evident that the media is playing a large enough role in society that it’s beginning to have vast effects on the “normal” population. It’s gone so far that even now, men are being affected.
So, today’s burning question for the male gender: how does it feel to be physically scrutinized to the point that you’re considering plastic surgery? Not so great, right?

Just think, maybe some of these men are/were the types to wish their girlfriends/wives had a little more up top. Irony, no?
Now if only body parts were so easily shuffled around…
I love my moobs, they match my testicles.
You offically owe me $8 for this month’s birth control, which I will clearly not be taking advantage of until I can get that repulsive imagery out of my head.
Careful,you could hurt my feelings.
You hurt my sex drive, so I feel it’s only fair.
You have nipples on your testicles? That’s…unusual.
I see a significant difference between male and female breast reduction…if a man is overweight and just goes to surgery to fix it, chances are his titties will come back.
Women usually go in because of back problems because their boobs aren’t necessarily caused by weight problems, so their boobs don’t really “come back”.
When men are the ones in charge of designing and editing the women’s magazines and gossip sites (like sister site Evil Beet) which scrutinize women to the point of considering surgery, then you can get snarky.
When men are predominantly* the ones in charge
We still need a damned edit button
I second the wish for edit button goodness.
Perhaps not coincidentally, the prevalence of BPAs, phthalates, and other endocrine disruptors in industrial runoff has contributed to the feminization of men. Maybe more men have moobs now than 50 years ago.
I don’t know if that is necessarily the cause though. I feel like it has become the norm (at least, if we look at any sitcom or regular tv show) for a wife/girlfriend to maintain her appearance while being completely infatuated with a jiggly, lazy man with a rack to rival her own. Yes, I realize that real life =/= entertainment, but it does usually illustrate some themes that come up in society.
^This isn’t to say Sabine is wrong, mind you, just that I think this is a bigger factor.
I blame the fact that humans became so bloody fat in the last 50 years more.
Also, more children are starting puberty earlier, which I believe is relative to what you have brought up.
edit, hell yes. My comment was to sabine.
