A new study shows that women often have, on average, a total amount of $200 worth of clothes that hang out in their closets and dressers and armoires — unworn.

Eighty percent of women surveyed also state that a large portion of their wardrobes often emulate days of when they were thinner.

A survey by SlimFast states that women often have a range of sizes that span three numbers.

What about you, women?  How much do you estimate that you spend on clothing in a year?  All I know is that I, ashamedly, spend approximately $600 a month in clothing.  To some of you that might be a drop in the bucket and to some of you it might be a mortgage payment.  I guess it varies across the spectrum from frugal to compulsive and I consider myself to be more along the lines of compulsive.

I also admit to hanging onto clothes of my “glory days” — I can only hope to fit back into them one day, but the attempts seem more and more futile the older I get.

How much do you guys spend on clothing and accessories a month?  Do you find yourself checking out items in your closet that still have tags on them a year after purchasing them or are you more thrifty when it comes to spending your hard-earned dough on clothes that are going to last you three, four and five seasons?

I spend 200-500 a year on clothes, this comes down to about 3 new pairs of jeans, 12 shirts, and 1-2 pairs of shoes. I only go shopping for them once a year and at the same time I go through my closet and get rid of everything that is horribly faded, shrunk, ripped, or I simply don’t wear much for whatever reason. Compulsive shopper/hoarder I am not.

I really think living in clutter/filth is a sign of mental illness. What you surround yourself with (your home, your car your general surroundings) is like a mental snapshot of your own mind. Cluttered within, cluttered without.

  3. Blurry says:

$7200 per year? But how much you spend isn’t what matters, it’s the quality that you end up with.

$7200 at Wal-Mart will buy one of everything. Most won’t last a season, though.

$7200 at Sak’s will get you a nice, varied wardrobe.

That’s more than I spend – at least by half. I am a huge sale shopper.

Last year, I fell in love with this beautiful black faux fur jacket. It was…sumptuous

I went to Macy’s every week to try it on and moan to myself over the $600 price tag It was killing me.

Lo and behold, December sales hit – big time. I watched it for awhile longer. I had one of those 25% off anything in the store coupons, combined with another 20% for using my Macy’s charge. Final cost? $71!

I dress well. I have to – but I also prefer quality. I have suits that I bought eons ago. However, they are beautifully made and of a classic style. I splurge on blouses and accessories. My big weakness is shoes. I love shoes. And bags. Mmmmmm bags.

I think that a hoarder is a person who saves every damn thing.

Not just clothes, shoes and so forth – but the tags from them, the receipts and the ketchup packets and napkins from McDonald’s. They throw NOTHING away.

  4. Joey says:

I spend less than 500,no joke. Most of the time I’m in jeans and denim work shirts, whether I’m on the job or not. Work boots during the day, loafers and crocs at home, yes crocs! I’m crazy about crocs, most comfortable shoe made.

    • Blurry says:

Those are fantastic around the house -nothing beats them for running to the basement, out for the mail, etc. I got 4 pairs of Crocs in varying colors at Gabriel Bros for $5 a pair. That place rocks for shoes – if you have very small or very large feet.

I also got a pair of Carolina boots there for $22.

I have made a committment not to buy new clothes until I am back to at least a size twelve. So I have 2 pairs of jeans, 2 skirts, 2 sweaters, 1 vest and a few teeshirts and singlets. Thats it.

I hate hoarding. I would rather have less than more.

    • rhonda says:

That’s pretty much where I am now. I think at this point I have jeans all the way down to my initial goal size, ones that I outgrew through pregnancy and laziness. I’m currently a 16 and I’m initially aiming for a size 10 since that was my pre-pregnancy size but I still needed to lose weight back then so hopefully I’ll keep going and need to buy more jeans. I only anticipate going down one size in shirts because I have big boobs even at a low weight and I can take in most of the ones I have now.

      • Lady Goo Goo says:

it totally sux that I drive past a plus size store all the time and I’m like “Oh! pretty blouse! NOOOOO DO NOT GET COMFORTABLE AT THIS SIZE!”

  7. rhonda says:

I really don’t spend much at all on clothes. Maybe $200 a year on clothes and another $100-150 on shoes. That comes to a couple of pairs of yoga pants, couple of gym shirts, a couple of pairs of jeans, a couple of bras, a few shirts, and some underwear. I generally buy 1 decent pair of shoes and 2 pairs of sneakers a year. I shop a lot of sales, I have several shirts that cost $3.50 or less. Right now I’m wearing a shirt that should have been $40 and cost me $10, jeans that are $32 retail that I got for $20, underwear from a 5 pack that was on clearance for $1.27, and a bra that should have been $38 that I got for $15.

If I need something dressy I make it myself. My wedding dress cost just over $200 in fabric and notions and would have cost about 8-10 times that to purchase.

    • Lady Goo Goo says:

i just saw an episode of say yes to the dress and a bride spent $27 000 on a dress that she had to CHANGE because she didnt like the skirt.

      • Blurry says:

        That is sickening.

Even if I were a billionaire, there is no way I would spend that on a dress that you wear one day!

      • Erin says:

That show makes me frustrated, partly because I do so lust after the dresses, and partly because of the hugely spoiled women who appear to need 3 dresses for their third wedding.

        • Lady Goo Goo says:

I know – its crazy! Or the spoilt little brats who are like ‘Oh, well I bought 8 of my closest friends so we could try on your worst dresses and laugh!’

I got married in a suit. I don’t know why I am obsessed with the show. I think I just like how wet straight girls get over tulle.

        • Erin says:

Like I said. I lust after the dresses.

  8. Maire says:

I don’t spend a lot on clothes, and I don’t buy clothes all that often. Maybe replace a pair of jeans when they get too worn to wear, every few months or so. The majority of my wardrobe are tshirts and jeans, and I have three pairs of shoes that have lasted me well over 3 years, each. (Nice shoes, boots, and work shoes) The most expensive thing in my wardrobe is a $300 corset, which, since I spent so much on, I make excuses to wear. I love that thing. To death.

I don’t care much about clothes, but I try to maintain a good appearance and keep things nice and neat. I have a set of clothes specifically for job interviews, and I don’t wear it often to keep it neat. I don’t hoard- If I can’t wear it, I give it to someone who can, or I tear it apart and make some wearable piece of clothing out of it. (I have an inumerable amount of shirt-dresses, because fabric is cheap and hoarding that is fine)

…Don’t talk to me about fabric hoarding. Don’t.

  9. Joey says:

I have a question, how can you girls stand those thongs, doesn’t that dental floss thingy riding up your but crack drive you crazy? Thats a serious question,I’m not just trying to get another zinger here. They look about as comfortable as a noose around your neck.

    • Blurry says:

They are actually more comfortable than a lot of women’s panties.

Most women’s panties tend to ride up so that you end up with a makeshift thong anyway.

May as well cut to the chase :)

    • rhonda says:

I don’t get it either. I used to have some but I haven’t worn them in years. It’s not like you can see undies under jeans anyway so there’s no reason to be uncomfortable. The only things I wear that have a VPL are yoga pants and that’s only at the gym. I’d rather have VPL than work out in a thong because if you sweat while wearing a thong it gets really uncomfortable really quickly.

    • Erin says:

I actually find them to be far more comfortable than regular underwear. Like Blurry said, most underwear bunch up, and at least with thongs there’s about 1/10 of the material wedged up your ass.

    • Jess says:

This may be TMI, but after the birth of my daughter, my episiotomy scar would get irritated by a thong. I haven’t worn one in many moons…

Before the baby, I preferred thongs, they were comfortable and sexy. I’m a huge advocate of no panty lines.

Now that I have thong issues, if I ever wear something that would show panty lines, I would rather go commando than wear a thong.

    • Vchilds says:

Well, most of the time I go commando. Ok, I’m waiting for it……….I’ve never had any problems, been like that my entire life. Except in dress pants or white pants, then I find something that works. I hate pantylines and I hate the way the bunch up!!

I will admit that now, the panty line has gotten so much better that I now own some that don’t bunch up and probably wear them more than I used to. But with everyday jeans, nope.

    • Sydney says:

No buttfloss for me! My fiance doesn’t care for them–he calls them “hooker panties”–and I find them uncomfortable. Just boyshorts and bikini briefs for me.

  10. Dualpersonality says:

I don’t have much money so I wait until the sale at 1-3 good stores and then buy about $500-700 worth of clothes once or twice a year at the most.
I never had items unworn in my closet, although I have seen this situation in many of my friend’s closets.
Also I only have the one size I wear -well it is two sizes because I am a 6 in tops and 4 in pants.
Then I go through my closet each year and take out anything I have not worn in 6 months.

  12. Whit says:

I love to shop, but I know my budget, and buying clothes for the hell of it is just not feasible for me right now. I go through my closet and dresser drawers at least 3 times a year. I have so many t-shirts, it’s ridiculous. I never throw away jeans unless they have quite literally gone out of style. Skinny jeans, fat jeans, whatever, I know that one day, some way or another, I’ll probably be back at all of those sizes, so I try to never throw away such a great staple as jeans.

I’ll typically go shopping three times a year, to buy clothes for the season. I’ll buy more expensive clothes that a well made. I usually don’t buy anything extravagant, but rather neutral colors that I can wear with anything. I’m not an accessory person at ALL. I don’t wear ANY jewelry. My ears aren’t even pierced! But shoes….

…shoes are my weakness. My closet is filled with fantastic heels. Cheap, expensive, Steve Madden, Gucci, you name it. Shoes are my Achilles heel(s)! :)

    • Jess says:

The most expensive pair of heels I own are a pair I bought from Aldi in New York like 3 1/2 years ago. ($100) We were at the mall last month (in Phoenix) and they had the same pair I had bought! I totally thought there were seasons and a style would be obsolete after that year.

I used to be into COACH and Dooney and Burke purses (I have 1 of each, both gifts from my husband) but after having kids, there is no justifying spending that kind of money on shoes or purses. I don’t even miss my single life with disposable income. What I have now is real, more valuable than anything- and will never go out of style.

Buy things to live, don’t live to buy things… :)

      • Whit says:

I used to be big into Coach, as well, until girls in high school started carrying it and it lost all its novelty. Now, I carry a gigantic Jessica Simpson bag that I paid $90 for, which I’ve carried for 2 years. I’ll continue to carry it until it completely tears apart.

I definitely am with you on the “buy things to live, don’t live to buy things.” I’d rather eat Spam, live in a shack, and wear Keds and be deliriously happy than live in a mansion eating filet mignon, with Manolo’s on my feet and be completely miserable.

      • Jess says:

ALDO not Aldi- I just saw that typo and I was like, what the hell is Aldi?!

  13. Sydney says:

I’ll admit it–I have something of a love affair with buying clothes. I am very fond of my wardrobe and dressing well is extremely important to me. However, as I am getting married in August (and I owe the effing government $500 due to an error in my taxes), money is a little tight right now and I can’t really indulge myself. Which is a damn shame; there’s an amazing dress on ModCloth I’ve been drooling over….

    • Whit says:

OMG, I LOVE Modcloth!!! I just bought 3 dresses from there last week. I have to send one back because it’s too small :(, but it’s ok.

      • Sydney says:

Have you seen the Retail Therapy Dress? Must have!!!!!!

But I just found out that my wedding cake is going to be $750+ so I probably shouldn’t…..

        • rhonda says:

$750? This is why I need to get in to the wedding cake business.

        • Sydney says:

I know…my fiance was a little freaked by the price (I’m the spender, he’s the saver, in case you hadn’t gathered…)….but, to be fair, the quality of the cake is INCREDIBLE, and I’ve been compromising and being as cheap as possible for just about everything else, so I want this to be the big splurge.

The flavors are going to be: chocolate with whipped ganache filling, vanilla with raspberry filling, pumpkin with chai filling, lemon with key lime filling, and marbled with hazlenut filling. I’m pretty excited, let me tell you.
