After weeks and months of Letterman being pegged as an anti-feminist woman hater sex-beast, he’s embarked on a female undertaking: he’s hired a female writer for his long-running show.
Longtime writer’s assistant Jill Goodwin has recently been promoted to staff writer. She’s held the assistant position since 2001 and sources say that she had hoped and prayed to finally receive this much-deserved and sought-after position on the show.
Congratulations to Goodwin and hopefully she’ll add a little bit of well-rounded femininity to the current format of the show — Lord knows it could boost the show’s ratings after previous allegations regarding Letterman’s adversity to the catch-phrase “workplace abstinence.” The new appointment by Letterman also gives a boost to women in the generally male-dominated comedy sketch line of business — an issue most recently addressed by a Vanity Fair article stating that there are more women in the Supreme Court than there are on the sketch comedy-writing scene, which is still as good in its own right, if not better.
Let’s just hope that we can move beyond Letterman’s dirty deeds and begin to focus on a new direction for the show. Hopefully the soiled laundry of he said/she said regarding sexual escapades on the set won’t return anytime soon … ’cause really, who wants to picture Letterman doing the dirty — aside from my grandmother — anyway?
