If you’re aged twenty-four years or older, you’ll recognize Ann M. Martin as a famed author’s name.
Martin penned the series of my childhood, The Babysitter’s Club. As I mentioned on ZL earlier in the year, the BSC was my all-time favorite adolescent series and I was superbly pleased to find out that Ann M. Martin is re-releasing the famed books to a new, younger generation.
This April, Scholastic plans to revamp some of the books, repackage them and re-release them to the public in hopes of igniting a new fervor in today’s generations. Martin is also penning a prequel to the series called “The Summer Before.” Martin states that although she’s written several books since the end of the BSC series, she didn’t feel the same about them:
“When I started to think about the books with a certain amount of nostalgia, I was happy to revisit them … I have had many suggestions from fans over the years for reunion books that take place far in the future [but] I was more interested in exploring the characters and what led them up to the beginning of the series.”
While the books were initially released in the mid-eighties, I feel they’d still be relevant to today’s adolescent girl. Each character in the book had qualities and characteristics that weren’t based on the era; all of the characters’ traits would most definitely be able to transcend time.
Although you can currently find the books in secondhand stores or online forums such as Amazon or eBay, the Babysitter’s Club books are currently out of print.
I am thrilled to say that I will be one of those who will more than likely pre-order the book. I think I have the entire collection, give or take a few, and will count myself among the many who will gratefully add this final touch to his or her collection.

The Babysitters Club was one of my favourite series growing up – the only thing that confused me slightly was some of the fashion (oh Claudia – what craziness the 80’s wrought upon you), but I just figured that that’s how Americans dressed – not realising that they were written about five years before I had even been born.
Other than the fact that I really dislike small children, they were great books – and who didn’t want hair like Dawn, or a boyfriend like Logan? It’s the mark of a well loved series that I can remember 90% of the characters names, without having read one of the books for about eight years.
I used to love these books! I would get like 10 of them at a time from the library and read them in a week. And for the record, I’m only 21. BSC was NOT before my time! =)
Same here. I’m also 21, and I had a crazy-huge collection of those books.
BSC was kinda after my time but I read a few, mostly because my little sister was in to them. I never really saw the appeal but then again I didn’t like the Judy Blume books either. Maybe I just skipped being an adolescent girl.
i read the babysitters’ little sisters series, not the originals, and loved loved loved them. maybe when i have kids i’ll read the babysitters club with them.
There is really bad BSC lesbian fan fiction out there – mostly about Kristy and Dawn.
I would like to see a little more character development as the series progrsses – some things changed, but in a lot of was the books were like the Simpsons where everything goes back to the status quo at the end of the episode. And how many summers do you get while you are 13 – they never seemed to grow older!
The Baby-Sitter’s Club has actually been re-released fairly recently in graphic novel format. They have been super popular at the library where I work!
My sister is on holiday in Africa at the moment and has no access to the internet – but I think she just wet her pants in excitement without knowing why.
Incredibly good blog post and genuinely assists with understanding the subject matter better.
