Doesn’t matter what goes on in Hollywood and how minute you might consider yourself; someone — usually lots of them — will have comments on each and every thing you do.

Kate Gosselin, who has never really entered my circle of acknowledgement, has started her life over.  I never followed Jon & Kate Plus 8 and had only even heard of either of the two through various friends who did watch the show.  Once things started getting sticky with Jon and Kate, I started paying attention.  To the situation, that is, not the show.  I was sincerely wondering how a woman in this type of spotlight (read: reality show star) would handle these types of hurdles.  I’d hoped that Kate would kick the philandering, Ed Hardy-wearing douche to the curb.  Eventually she did and apparently, never looked back.

Since then, Kate has received a lot of flack from the media regarding various decisions:  Kate’s decision to divorce Jon, Kate winning custody of the children, Kate being granted their shared home and now the latest buzz is surrounding Kate’s new hairstyle.

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, Gosselin (the clean one) had hair extensions put in by What Not to Wear stylist Ted Gibson.  She’s also been receiving a lot of crap from various media outlets for how “awful” they look.  Regardless of the media’s displeasure, Kate claims that she did it for herself and is happy to have a “fresh start” on every aspect of her life:

“I’m starting over. It’s good to have hair again. I never thought I’d have short hair for as long as I did. I feel like this is a fresh start, a fresh me, a fresh life. I’m rebuilding. There’s no option for this not to be a good year. Now I get to start over with a new self and new goals.”

Although Gosselin is outwardly happy with her whole-life transformation, the majority of people do not seem to be.  This blog, in particular, states that there’s “serious female backlash” regarding the reality star’s new hairstyle of choice.  The woman writing the article (which you can read in its backbiting entirety here) claims that Kate’s received a 0% approval rating from all of the people that she polled.

As far as I’m concerned, she’s a human being first and a woman second and both of them earn her the right to do whatever the hell it is that she wants without having to answer to the media, of all things. She’s spent a few years in the spotlight, things probably didn’t turn out the way that she had initially expected them to but on the whole, she’s handled them with much more grace under fire than most people in her situation probably would.

It’s a new year — let’s commend the woman for reinventing herself on all facets instead of snarking on her “barbie hair.”  Personally?  I think she looks great.  But whether I do or don’t shouldn’t spark such a catty, vapid conversation among the interwebs.

I think they look great and she of all people deserves a fresh start for the new year.

I don’t care about this woman, her hair, or her life. I wish these reality tv pseudo celebs would go away. I don’t see this kind of coverage for the guys on Deadliest Catch or Bear Grylls or Mike Rowe or Blythe Beck or Lauri Ditunno –people who actually do something. Instead I have the morons of Jersey Shore, The Hills, and Jon and Kate shoved down my throat.

Go the f@ck away, the lot of you.

    • Sarah says:

      I love Bear Grylls.

    • Nat says:

      Ditto.

And anyway, if we HAVE to discuss these jackasses, there are 8 kids here struggling to understand what happened to mommy and daddy and what they did wrong and why the cameras are gone, and by all accounts that I’ve heard from people who watch their show, Kate’s an overbearing bitch who treats her kids like crap and now she has sole custody of them and no cameras to make her behave (at least until she figures out a way to exploit them without her husband’s permission – as easy as it is to make fun of his outfits and his jackassery, HE is the one who walked out on the reality contract and spared those kids on-screen divorce proceedings), but let’s all talk about her fucking extensions instead. They’re SO much more important than those poor screwed-up children.

      • Alzaetia says:

Except Jon didn’t “walk away” from the show till he found out that his public jackassery was getting him kicked off of the show. Then he had an “epiphany” and halted production of the show altogether.
That makes him a vindictive little boy, not a good parent. Those kids are screwed.

Oh yeah, I wasn’t going to leave a comment until some others showed up. I am so sick of these people. The hair extensions? I don’t know if it’s the color or what, but she doesn’t look real now. Her chin looks different, her hair color looks to me sort of grayish, and chicklet teeth. Don’t know, but I think she looked much better before even with the toiletbrush hairstyle. To each their own.

    • Jules says:

I guess some missed the entire point of the post. Some want to focus on what atrocities she’s done to her face and/or hair and what gross dude she might be boning and what not instead of focusing on the fact that she’s a woman and has endured a probably hard situation and has seemed to overcome quite well and good on her for that.

      • Alzaetia says:

Unless…some people think that she hasn’t handled the situation well, and that her own actions led to many of the problems she’s facing right now.
But you know, why have a thought out opinion on anything but hair.
Also, the post was written by somebody who admittedly has little to no knowledge of the entire situation.

      • jeneria says:

She’s gone through what thousands of women have gone through, with the exception of the poorly conceived television show that allowed her to exploit her children. Not every woman who goes through what she’s gone through, not to mention those who go through worse, gets this much ink spilled about them. Why should she? Why should I applaud her? Shouldn’t I applaud my friend who left an abusive relationship and is getting her life on track more than this chick who has added extensions to her hair?

That’s what bothers me about these reality “stars,” that we should applaud them for going on tv and being “normal” only to suddenly demand celebrity privileges and statuses and mutate into anything but normal.

      • Vchilds says:

Hmm..Go get $5000 worth of hair extenstions, then pose for People magazine and give them the inside scoop on how long it took, how many times she talked to the kids, yadda yadda, yadda. Of course I’m going to comment about them. Is that not why she gave the interview?

        • Sydney says:

I read it was more like $7,000.

I’m all for pampering yourself once in awhile, but spending that much on your HAIR is hard to wrap my head around.

I’m getting a $30 haircut tomorrow (and that’s with a coupon), and I’m disgruntled about that, lol.

  4. Whit says:

Perhaps, had she not exploited the ever lovin’ SHIT out of her children and marriage for a pretty penny, she wouldn’t be needing a “fresh start.” I don’t care what she does to her face or hair or body, she and Jon have wronged their children in an almost unforgivable way, and that, to me, is absolutely disgusting.

  5. Mallory says:

I’m not really a fan of her or the whole circus surrounding her and Jon and their kids, but people are blowing thing way out of proportion, the woman can change her hairdo.
I don’t know if they messed around with the picture or what, but I think that this photo looks terrible. She looks fake and the hair looks like 15 different shades of fake. Good for her for doing whatever the hell she likes with her hair, but I hope it looks better in real life.

  6. Jillian says:

You have to realize that all ‘reality’ shows are edited to provide drama. Drama makes good tv. Several days of tape is turned into a half hour show. I doubt that she was as overbearing as she was portrayed on the show.

I also think that the producers may have made Jon seem like less of an idiot on the show, but that’s another story…

  7. Erin says:

Barbie hair? Maybe. But if I could pull off Barbie hair goddammit I would :)

If she wants Barbie hair, let there be Barbie hair!!

  8. JorgeMacD says:

Part of the problem is not long ago she was complaining to the media about struggling to come up with the money to raise her family and now she’s getting a hairdo which cost several thousand dollars.

    • mimi in mo says:

That’s what I was thinking at 1st but the more I think about it, I’m sure she got the extensions for free. Even being a faux celebrity will get you tons of stuff for free. And the guy that did it is getting lots of free publicity. So it’s a win-win for both of them.

        • mimi in mo says:

In that article it says that is what it costs. It doesn’t say that is what she paid for it. That’s why I brought it up because I’ve read alot about what it costs to get your hair done like she did but no where does it say she actually paid for it. For all we know People magazine paid for it or he (the guy who did it, I forgot his name) did it for the free publicity. Don’t worry I’m not one of those crazy ‘Team Kate’ people (I’m actually team kids) it’s jst that I haven’t read ANYWHERE that she actually paid for it.
