This is the kind of news I can really sink my teeth into.
Research emerging from Texas A&M University (where I can vouch, yes, everything is quite bigger in Texas!) claims that unemployment and poverty multiplies the amount of sex that a person has — especially if they’re the one laid off. 2,362 participants were surveyed, ages 21 through 27, regarding what they do with their free time after losing a job and results state that individuals below the poverty line and who are unemployed are more likely to engage in sexual encounters with a variety of individuals than people who are above the poverty line and employed.
Why is this? Frankly, I think it’s got to do with having more time on your hands. If you have more time on your hands, you’re well-rested and have the energy to expend on sex that you might not otherwise, right?
However, on a sobering aspect of the study, the individuals who participated in this study were also said to have riskier sex and neglect to use proper birth control or STD protection. One of the factors that researchers tie into this particular nuance of results are due to the uncertainty of what the future will hold for the individuals with no job to speak of:
“Unemployed and poor individuals may be less likely to perceive their future as both positive and stable, which may lead to reduction in their ability to delay gratification and comprehend future consequences of their actions.”
That’s interesting. And sad.
If any of you watched the State of the Union address last night (I did; all approximate 70 minutes of the President’s speech), you’ll remember that President O claims that his highest priority at this point and time in America’s history is job creation.
If the negative results of this study do ring true for the individuals in question, the government better hop on and get that jobs bill, like, stat or there’ll be other, more deadly, consequences to deal with than a floundering economy.

Cutting taxes would SO help the jobs situation. The government cannot “create jobs” because it cannot make a profit (it’s “profit” is our tax dollars). It doesn’t have a product to sell. You have to have the DEMAND for jobs in order to create jobs. Simply giving a company money to hire more people does not create the NEED for a job. The market has to become more stable, and allowing people to keep more of their money would aid that situation tremendously. The more money people have in their pockets, the more money they will spend, which will create more demand, which will then create the necessity for new jobs. It’s simple. The government throwing money everywhere will NOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.
You nailed it,and the uncertainty of the new health care costs to small business has things at a stall. Capitalists are in business to make money, one of many of life’s undeniable truths.
And by the way, that’s the greatest picture ever.
seconded.
I’m in the construction industry,so I’m laid off every winter and this article is being way to analytic, you simply have more time for fun. For three months I ice fish, drink and screw. In fact I’m going to do one of them right now, guess which one!
Ice Fish?
If you catch a whole bunch, you have to be careful when you cook it,so no one drowns.
Drink!
Hmm…my boyfriend is currently not going to school and doesn’t have a job. Perhaps this bodes well for me!
I’m out of work AND not getting laid take that study! (dammit)
