This scared the bejeesus out of me. And, no, it’s not a follow-up on Ashley’s piece on female genital mutilation. It’s a video from late 2008 about the pace of change of technology and the growing power of India and China in these spaces — something to think about as we stand on the precipice of 2010. In less than fifty years, experts predict someone will have built a supercomputer with greater computational capability than the entire population of the world. That’s pretty terrifying. We’re all going to be lectured on algebra and then killed by our computers, you guys. Use your future nemesis to share your thoughts in the comments section.

It’ll kind of be like that Will Smith movie, iRobot. Only not as cool and more deadly. LOL.
I don’t see the connection between a super computer and imminent violence. And the entire part about the amount of words used in Shakespeare’s time is a bit misleading, as they could invent words and spelling had not yet been standardized. All in all, it was very fascinating, quite overwhelming, but in no way terrifying. To assume that we can only continue to grow exponentially in the field of technology may prove to be a fallacy. Also, if a computer will someday exceed the human limit of computation, how will we know it it is right?
Sorry, not a big deal.
Although this is completely off-topic, that was REALLY REALLY COOL. Thanks for sharing it.
Some of their conclusions are rather tenuous. And I never take predictions as fact. But if they are correct, I still don’t see any danger in computers having more processing than human brains.
The comparisons are really neat though. All-around awesome presentation.
Didn’t you see the Terminator Kai?
No, actually…
I don’t see many movies. i miss a lot of cultural references.
Processing power does not equal cognizance.
The computer already scares me Sasha, think about it, right now GOOGLE aka the Anti-Christ is monitoring our every key stroke and building this huge ass file about our likes/dislikes and personality then selling it to God knows who to market shit to us in our actual postal mail box. One day Google will destroy earth.
Your kinda scaring me Lilly, but in a good way. You want to do some acid next weekend?
HAHA Joey. No thanks, drugs aren’t my thing. My paranoia comes naturally. :)
OK,if you change your mind, google me.
Snort. Might as well, Google’s cookies don’t expire until 2038.
And my husband keeps trying to tell me SkyNet isn’t real.
Not yet, anyway…
Wow! That’s pretty crazy. But I can’t say I’m feeling particularly paranoid yet.
That really is an amazing video,I would love to show it to Ted Kaczynski. I’ve watched it like three times.
You know, Lily brings up something interesting about Google building more and more sophisticated profiles of consumers for marketing purposes. I often find advertising annoying, but I have always wondered what is so horrible or terrifying about someone marketing to you in the most efficient and accurate way possible? I can think of a lot of stuff that scares me more than ads for things I would actually like and find genuinely useful.
