It was reported (also here) on the 24th that Mary J Blige slugged her husband at her CD release party after he had checked out a waitress one too many times. One day later, Blige’s representatives claimed that she was just breaking up a fight between her brother and her hubby. Apparently:
“The detailed rebuttal came after the News and New York Post cited witnesses who said the “No More Drama” hip-hop maven had smacked Kendu Isaacs at the swanky M2 Ultralounge in Chelsea on Tuesday, then warned him not to even think about “going Chris Brown on me.”
Wouldn’t it be nice if we all had professional representatives to fix every mistake we make?
Surprisingly (to myself anyway) I feel no sense of “you go girl” after reading this article. Abuse and violence are not gender specific terms and I do not feel that a husband and wife should ever turn to violence. What I do find striking about the combined articles, and what I find most relevant, is how violence is acceptable, only if it is exclusively between males. Now don’t get me wrong, I by no means ever think it’s okay to hit a girl, but I also don’t believe in double standards. She shouldn’t hit him either, and the brothers shouldn’t be hitting each other either. The coverage makes it sound like the only appropriate position Blige could have had in this scenario, was to be the helpless but inspirational woman in the middle, breaking up the barbaric, but culturally acceptable, aggression amongst the men. But hey, that’s better than coverage suggesting she’s buffer or tougher than her husband… right? Ah, too bad Ms. Blige, I believe this is a lose/lose situation.

“…then warned him not to even think about ‘going Chris Brown on me.’”
Am I a terrible person for finding that a tad amusing?
Anyway, I think the whole situation seems kind of ridiculous, whether she hit him for checking out the waitress or not.
Were there is love and passion, often violence. Norman Mailer stabbed one of his wives with a pen knife, and later wrote that when you use a knife rather than a gun,it shows that there is still love left in the relationship. Thats funny!
Norman Mailer was also dreadfully misogynistic, so I can’t find that particularly amusing.
“… then warned him not to even think about “going Chris Brown on me.””
What an utter cunt! So she can hit her husband but then warns him not to lay one hand on her? What the fuck, seriously?
I don’t like violence, but I think if anyone hits anyone, the receiver is within his rights to answer back. Tough shit if the receiver is about 2m tall and you’re a tiny woman, but maybe you should have thought it twice before.
Anyone over the age of 25 still acting like this is an asshole plain and simple. Grow up!!!!
