Porn-Watching in Public: Is It an Epidemic Yet?

The Washington Post has a funny article today about a pressing issue: People watching porn in public. On airplanes, on trains, in libraries and on the DVD players in their SUVs.

On a recent cross-country trip from Los Angeles, Jana Matthews thought she’d lucked out when her friendly seatmate cued up a cartoon on his laptop. Her four children were enthralled; she hoped listening in might keep them occupied. Then the cartoon characters started doing things that cartoon characters should not be doing. Naked things. Naked, noisy things, unfettered by the restraints of human anatomy because the participants were, after all, hand-drawn.

Another story:

“At a Wizards game!” says Dan Merrill, who works in accounting in Washington. “We were at a Wizards game and this guy was watching porn on his iPhone!” Odd on many levels, but there the guy was, kicking back, watching the sport, watching the other sport, just as he would at home.

Now, look, I’m fairly open-minded about all things porn, but I guess I just don’t understand why you would want to watch porn on an airplane while sitting next to children. I mean, how creepy is that? I feel guilty swearing in front of non-verbal babies. I can’t imagine watching porn anywhere near a child without feeling completely disgusting. And what’s the point, even? You can’t get laid, you can’t get yourself off, and you can’t make fun of the cheesy headboard and bright green shag carpet with your friends. Why would you want to watch porn, alone, in public? Have any of you been in a similar situation? How did you handle it?

    • “no COUTH” intresting choice of words. You know, two wrongs never make a right… just a bigger mess. Don’t go spilling drinks on other people and their things. I this is really how you act, and there are enough others like you that you find this to be acceptable behavior, than there is no wonder why we are in so much trouble as a people.

  1. Even though the guy in the first story was in the wrong, the woman was just as wrong for letting her kids become someone else’ problem. If he was watching a legit cartoon and suddenly stopped watching it, odds are that the kids would have whined and harassed him to no end.

    • No child of mine will ever do that. I don’t allow my children to whine and nag other people. And I don’t think the woman was allowing her kids to be someone else’s problem. It happened to be convenient that he was watching a cartoon that the kids could easily view as well. If he turns it off, I don’t think anyone would say anything, nor should they.

That being said, I think it’s disgusting that he was watching that in public with children around. Ick!

      • I agree. Completely.
And I’d like to add that exposing children to porn is a sign of pedophilia. It’s like flashing. It’s not ok just because it’s on your computer screen.

  2. Well you know, who knows what he was ACTUALLY watching. He could have very well been watching a regular anime that had sexual content. I mean a lot of anime movies do have sexual content, explicit even. The same could be said of many live-action R rated movies. Unless the woman caught more of a glance and kept watching the man’s computer screen, that very well could have been the case. I can’t image that as a parent if the sexual content continued to be played she wouldn’t do anything. If so, nice parenting skills :p
That being said, porn in public is certainly a problem, but where do we draw the line? If on a flight you were watching “Unfaithful” on your laptop, having planned out nicely a film to watch on long flight, would you be annoyed if the woman sitting next to you asked you to turn off your laptop in case her children, sitting at least one seat away from you were watching?
Think about the movies that people can watch on those individual airplane screens on the back of seats? I definitely remember watching movies like Lord of War on one of those. BUT if I was on a plane with my children and I caught them looking at someone elses screen with that movie playing, I would NOT be happy.
There is just such a fine line. I guess porn is “you know it when you see it” ?

  3. Whell this might sound weird but porn is natural? sex is all human its Nothing to be grossed out for.? i mean its only a normal naked body making some love XD … im 13 actully and i said that :p

  4. I used to work in a library when I was 13-14, and the number of men who would use the free computers to look up porn was mind-boggling.

I’m not against porn, but I think it should be a private thing, just like sex should be.

  5. I think it’s disgusting that they are not doing this in public, is it not illegal to expose children to this kind of crap? because im pretty sure there’s gotta be some law against it or something…

In response to Gigi’s comment, it doesn’t have to be anime to have some R rated content, have you ever seen the simpsons? or family guy? or south park? or how about that new cleveland show they’re promoting on fox?.. It’s just fucking sick.

  6. Porn and the Public
I believe the good Lord fashioned the sexual relationship between man and woman, husband and wife to be shared only between the two with pureness, honesty and love. I was meant, to my way of thinking, to be that special bond between the two that no one else is allowed to inter or interfer with. The dark side would like you to accept porn as a normal way of life, when in reality that is where this socity is headed. Acceptance of anything, anywhere and anytime no matter whom it effects, no matter whom it harms. We are slowly changing from the bright star of truth, justice and the american way into a county that defines action with out either at times. I think I can relate to the Roman socity of Jesus time where everything went out the window for sake of a few. When you kick god out of you life, as some have done in this country, your headed for a train wreck. God Bless America.

  7. its simply for the thrill of doing something out in the open. watching porn in public is a less obvious form of pleasing a thrill that one gets from the potential of getting caught having sex in public. its a thrill that people seem to enjoy.
