Model Joanna Krupa — you may recognize her from Dancing With The Stars — is undeniably a beautiful woman.  She is also the cover girl of December’s issue of Playboy.

This week she spoke out about posing nude and characterized some feminists as “self-important” because of their viewpoints on Playboy.

“I think they suffer from lack of knowledge and tunnel vision. How many of those self-important, so-called ‘feminists’ have been on the set when a celebrity shot a Playboy spread? There you go. What is feminist about discriminating a photo shoot just because it involves female (partial) nudity that happens to give men pleasure? Pathetic,” Krupa told Tarts in an exclusive interview.

The opposing camps are so clearly defined on the topics of posing nude and porn.  Many women feel that by claiming the role, making the conscious choice to show their bodies, they are no longer being objectified.    Here’s the point I think Krupa is missing:  Yes, some feminists do take issue with the whole centerfold image.  Their objections don’t stem from a place of believing that breasts should stay under cover; it’s about believing that we, women, have so much more to offer than spread legs and augmented breasts.

On a personal level, I want my daughter to receive the message from me loud and clear:  she can blaze her own trail in this world, not one that is created, defined and managed by a man.  Women who actively pursue a stint in Playboy may believe that they are writing their own ticket, but the images in these magazines, the makeup and hair, the most commercially desirable body types are male-driven.  No matter who is making the choice for a woman to disrobe, she’s still doing it for a man’s gratification.  Why are women so focused on satisfying a guy?

Krupa went on to point out that posing for Playboy is one opportunity in which women get paid more than men for the same tasks.

“There are several great reasons why female celebs line up to shoot Playboy: finally a woman gets paid more than a man for comparable work, she gets to set the rules, gets to be in a real team work with other women, as many key positions at Playboy are in fact held by women!” Krupa adds. “She brings in her creative ideas, gets involved in the photo selection and ends up with something she co-created through and through.”

Rather than choosing the Playboy route as the career path that allows women to succeed, to exceed the monetary accomplishments of men, let’s instead use our talents and skills in industries that make a difference in this world.  Women have made so many advances in the past hundred years; it’s time to flourish on our own merit and abilities instead of continuing to rely on being the eye candy guys like.

There’s not enough money in the world for me to want to pose nude for Playboy, frankly. There’s one guy in the world who deserves to see me naked, and I don’t make him pay for it ^_^

  2. XYZ says:

This woman is supposed to be sexy? Beautiful? Take a closer look. Shes simply ugly.

    • Kai says:

Give me a break. She’s an attractive girl who’s not quite perfect. No need to make a point by exaggerating the other way. Besides, playboy wants bodies, not faces. I have no idea what this girl’s body looks like from the headshot.

  3. Joey says:

Camille Paglia often has stated that a women’s sexuality is the ultimate empowerment tool, something that many have employed. Think of Madonna, whom I consider a feminist. Why do you think radical Islam is so frightened by it.

    • Zelda says:

I agree. Just because we CAN do other things doesn’t mean we CAN’T do this. The human experience is many things, including sex and exhibitionism. It’s just one tool in the box. Yes, many women overrue it. But many don’t use it at all. To each her own. BUt repressing sexuality just leads to shame.

  4. Lenora says:

Nudity when done tastefully is fine but porn is disgusting and I will never understand in a million years how a feminist could support that.

    • Kim says:

I personally don’t enjoy porn when the women is particularly submissive, etc. but so long as she is happy doing it, why do you care?
Porn isn’t just for men, I’ve spent my share of time watching it, too. A feminist could support it because she believes that a woman is capable of doing *anything* she puts her mind to, not just the more noble things like climbing the corporate ladder or being a politician or an astronaut or starting her own business, being a mother, etc. If she wants to be a pron star and overcome all the “feminists” who think that it is wrong, then more power to her, she deserves our respect.

      • Lenora says:

Porn damages women. How is that feminism to do something that is disgusting, has no social value and will leave you with physical and emotional damage? Don’t even get me started on the objectification of women angle. Just look at the misogynistic names of these “films”.

        • Manda says:

You’re overgeneralizing. Some porn is disgusting. Some porn is demeaning to women.

What about porn made for couples? What about amateur porn? There are many varieties of porn that cater to different interests. Personally, I hate the typical silicone-injected blonde bimbo money shot type, but my fiance and I watch other types together. Mostly videos shot by other couples, or porn that’s made specifically for couples or women. It’s got a different spin to it.

As for pictures, where do you draw the line between porn and art? As far as I’m concerned, all porn is art to some degree; whether you like it or not is up to you.

You are judging something you’re not familiar with. You can’t leap to conclusions based on a pre-determined view of things. That’s the moron way.

        • Kai says:

Ask more than half the world about their ‘emotional damage’ from enjoying pornography once in a while…

You have the right to consider it disgusting, and not partake. Others have the right to feel differently. Strangely, your reactions are not necessarily indicative of the majority.

        • Zelda says:

          Orgasms totally have social value.

K on a mor serious note, though, what if it was girl-as-top porn, ie demeaning to men? Does that clan up the issue for you?
Also, a TON of psychological damage can be done by keeping sex bottom-shelf paper bag.

        • Alzaetia says:

You are just so full of blanket statements. You also seem like a total prude. Do you have sex? Do you turn off all the lights and hide under blankets when you do it?
Do you find no beauty at all in human bodies?

  5. Kim says:

“No matter who is making the choice for a woman to disrobe, she’s still doing it for a man’s gratification. Why are women so focused on satisfying a guy?”

She is making them feel good. just because it’s a sexual feeling, does that make it bad or anti-feminist? Most people enjoy making other’s feel good; giving someone a complement, making a meal for them, including them in a conversation if they seem lonely, etc. Why is it bad to make someone feel good sexually? Even some of the most open minded people view porn and prostitution as bad or even evil. But, so long as no one was forced into the profession, and the model/prostitute wants to do it, what is the harm? It’s a service, they make people feel good, just like nurses, counselors, teachers, and even spiritual leaders.

    • Lenora says:

90% of porn stars were sexually abused. What does that tell you? They may not have been forced into it physically but they had psychological problems that led them into it. Once the porn industry has chewed them up and spit them out their lives are a sad decline to a tragic end. What’s empowering about that? Anything that harms women is NOT feminism.

      • JorgeMacD says:

Porn stars and Playboy models are generally two different sets of women. I’m sure if you made a Venn diagram there would be some overlap, but don’t expect to see Sasha Grey doing regular centerfolds any time soon.

      • Kai says:

Freedom of choice. We’re talking posing nude here, not sex videos. For many women, there’s nothing forced or hurtful about it. And that’s their right, as much as disliking it is yours.

You’re right though. Anything that harms women can’t be accepted. From now on, all women will wear paper bags over their heads. You see, some women develop terrible psychological problems as a result of feeling inferior to other more beautiful women. Actually, it’s not all facial. Better bring in some burkas while we’re at it. Some women have also been harmed by working. It can be very stressful, and many women only work because of pressure others have put on them. For their safety, we had better ban working. Do you know what has gone on in the childhoods of some women? We can’t let them make decisions for themself as to whether they will be harmed.

…Or we could allow women to make their own choices, and intercede strongly when anyone attempts something nonconsentual.

      • Alzaetia says:

Where the hell did you get that statistic? Seriously, just because you say it on the internet does not make it true.

    • Sydney says:

The fact that you just compared porn stars to “nurses, counselors, teachers, and even spiritual leaders” blows my mind.

      I mean, seriously?

      • Kim says:

Lol, yeah… I just mean that all these other careers are professions where you help people/make them feel good, etc. so why is making some one feel good sexually so bad?

Maybe this is a better comparison: masseuses. They make you feel good physically, and afterward you’re all relaxed. Kinda like looking at playboy models, watching porn, or hiring a prostitute. The only real difference is the sexual part. If someone feels that sexual urges and activities are a natural, healthy human kind of thing, than (so long as you don’t having anything against masseuses) it should logically follow that you thing that playboy models, porn stars, and prostitution is perfectly fine, so long that everyone involved is a willing participant.

  6. Syd says:

    “is undeniably a beautiful woman”

    I’ll deny it. Ew.

Anyway, I’m more inclined to agree with her. Not her wording (it’s clearly not very educated), but if a woman wants to get naked for a man’s gratification, well….I think it’s pretty dumb to tell women not to do this in favor of skills that make a difference in this world. Like what? Medicine? Law? Literature? To expect ALL women to be clever enough to do these things is silly, not to mention the fact that they generally require years of expensive schooling. And it’s not a female thing either: not all men can do these things. Sometimes, the ONLY talent a person has is being attractive. And better they do that then, say, get into a life of crime or have six babies on welfare.

    • Kim says:

So for a woman to be in a profession like this, it’s because she is too stupid to do anything else? Wow. What about if thats what she enjoys doing? Just because you would rather be a lawyer than pose for playboy doesn’t mean thats what every other woman wants. I work part time as an artist’s model (yes, nude) for some of the art classes at my university. I enjoy my job- I like to see how others view my body, it’s interesting- I feel like I’m helping the students in the class grow artistically- and it pays really well (twice minimum wage). While I’m studying to be a teacher and I’d rather be a teacher than an artist’s model for the rest of my life, If I had the body to be a playboy bunny and they asked me to do that for a while, I probably would (except that I imagine that if a principal spotted me on the cover, it would be hard to get back into the education field). It sounds like fun to me, and I’m sure it pays quite well.

      • Peggy Olsen says:

No woman enjoys getting pounded in the ass by disease infested strangers while the whole world watches. These women are either disturbed or on drugs. Porn has nothing to do with healthy sexual urges and everything to do with men exploiting women for profit. The body is a temple not a prop for the sick fantasies of future serial killers.

        • Alzaetia says:

Some women do enjoy anal sex.
They test for diseases all the time.
My husband enjoys watching women have sex and he is not a sick man or a future serial killer.

        • Peggy Olsen says:

Really? So how come you’re not out making porno movies? You would want dozens of strangers doing that to you while people watch? Women who make a living out of this have BIG problems.

        • Zelda says:

          I’d never EVER do kareoke.
Doesn’t ean you’re a pervert and sick beause you would.
The man and I regularly have sex in fron of very open hotel windows.
Oh, and I get off to porn.

        • Alzaetia says:

I said some women. I didn’t say me, personally. For example, my best friend loves anal. She’s got some modesty issues, so I’m not sure she’d be comfortable being naked in front of strangers.
Fucking like a porn star in your personal life does not mean that you are suited to the life of a porn star.
There are women who enjoy having sex (all kinds) and have no modesty issues. Porn is good for them.

Of course there are women in the porn industry who have been abused or who have drug problems. There are women working at Taco Bell, working in the school system, working as executives and at every other profession who have been abused or have drug problems.

I don’t like the way you decree all women who do something you would never do as “dirty” or “troubled.”
They are different from you. That does not make them worth less than you are, nor does it mean that they are helpless victims. They chose a life you didn’t. That’s all.

        • MelKa says:

I can assure you that A LOT of women enjoy it. Without drugs or anything like that.

I-m sure your sexual partners really enjoy having sex with you. hahahaha

    • Kim says:

And also, enough with the cracks at her looks, good grief, are we in junior high?

She really IS gorgeous, though… I don’t know what yall’s issue is, unless it’s just jealousy.

  7. Maya says:

    Stop beating a dead horse!

This quote focuses on an issue addressed 25 to 30 years ago by second wave feminists. Second wave feminists focused on rejecting all things masculine.

While total separation of Masculine and Feminine was necessary at the time (a step on our path), we have since had a third and are near a fourth wave.

Now we acknowledge women can decide for themselves what to do.

  8. MelKa says:

    I’m 100% with Joanna Krupa.
She forgot to mention some other benefits.
Women using the power they are given by nature is the most feminist thing they can do.
Men can not use this in the same way, so lets be intelligent.
    Go Krupa!

  9. ciara says:

There are a lot of jobs I personally wouldn’t do as I would find the job disgusting- such as sponge bathing old people, changing colostomy bags, being a dentist, porn, cleaning toilets, and doing lindsay lohan’s makeup. All those jobs are degrading in some sense, and the people doing them may not enjoy the specific task, but there are so many disgusting jobs and someone needs to do them. I’m not pro-porn because I think it raises the bar in terms of physical perfection and being willing to do everything in bed and I think these things shouldn’t be honed to such an exact level. I don’t like porn because I feel like I’m being compared to it, and I can never compete with someone who is sexy for a living and spends lots of money on it!
That’s my reason for disliking porn- because though the women doing it may not be harming themselves, they are raising the bar for women everywhere and I feel like as a society it would be much better if we stopped oogling perfect bodies without a scrap of celulite who have spent hours in makeup. That’s not porn’s fault, but porn keeps it going.
And I BET that a lot of the other naysayers have the same motives as me for disliking porn. Power to the girls in the industry- less power to the rest of us!
