According to the cutting-edge Daily Mail, based out of the UK, states that the newest rage in fashion this fall is the unwanted and unforeseen return of the shoulder pad.
Unless you’re over six foot, under 110 pounds and have a neck length of seven inches, shoulder pads are the antithesis of fashion. At least as far as I’m concerned, with my 5-foot 2-inch frame and neck length of much, much less than seven inches.
Granted, there have been certain celebrities that have been able to pull off the the whole shoulder-padded look: Joan Crawford, for one. In 1930. She rocked it along with her crazy eyebrows. She kicked the shit out of shoulder pads and from then on, they remained buried in the bowels of the fashion-joke closet. Until the eighties.
I remember when I was much younger, my mother (who is even shorter than I) would bring home these horribly atrocious eighties-getup wraps that had shoulder pads stitched right into the garment. I must have been quite fashion-forward even then, because I vividly remember ruining several of her new frocks by attempting to cut the monstrosities out with shears.
Forget being the new fashion trend… This particular nuance of haute couture belongs on a re-aired episode of “What Not To Wear”.
What do you ladies think? Are these mega crap-whore accessories worth the flack that you’ll get in another ten years for wearing them today? Could the reintroduction of shoulder pads create yet another worldwide frenzy in the fashion world?

Joan Crawford is the only person who should ever wear shoulder pads. maybe Anjelica Huston could get away with it. Maybe…
Luckily the Daily Mail has about as much credibility as The National Enquirer.
Hate, hate, hate, shoulder pads, even back in the 80s when my Mom made me wear outfits that had them. I always pulled them out when I could.
What about Christina Applegate as Kelly Bundy?? She rocked the shit out of shoulder pads. I wanna make her 80’s slut look my new Friday night go-to.
I consider myself a fashionable girl, but this is something I would never ever ever even consider.
ugh.
I think this is one of those fashions that only looks good on very few people. As for me, HELL NO.
ew. ew. ew. This is right up the alley with the “harem” pants. bleh!
Yeah, harem pants and shoulder pads. I’d either look like a jackass or MC Hammer… Oh, wait…
I just saw Harem pants in a fashion catalog. I am certain this is proof of the coming apocolypse.
I look like that pic of Joan right now in a red Chiefs tee-shirt. I have VERY wide shoulders. So you can imagine how silly I looked in the 80’s the few times I attempted to where something w/ shoulder pads. I also used to cut them out of all my shirts. It sucked though because I couldn’t barrow my friends shirts who still had them in theirs. UGH! Awful, bad 80’s memories.
I need to go to a happy place now. 90’s & flannel…….
OMG the 80’s are one big horrible fashion nightmare I don’t ever want to revisit. Please dear God in heaven above make it so that I never again have to see lace leggings, pleather, big hair, mullets, rhinestones and shoulder pads EVER again!
WORD.
Unfortunately lace leggings, pleather, big hair (which I do kind of like, but not mullet-style) and shoulder pads are already back. Just give the rhinestones time.
The late 70’s to 80’s were not a good time fashion-wise. I really don’t understand why the fashionistas are bringing the worst aspects of it back.
Uuuugh I’ve been noticing a lot of celebrities wearing them lately, I knew they would cross over into the public. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t wish they didn’t. Eww.
Why is everyone so obsessed with the 80s? It was the most vomit inducing era ever as far as fashion went. And this is the most vomit-inducing trend of the 80s. Why bring them back? Ugh.
For once I agree with you. Why not bring back the 20’s fashions? The flapper era looked like a blast. Just keep the 80’s and the 50’s the hell away from me. Poodle skirts and lace pantyhose are not my thing.
Because it’s not that they specifically like the fashion, it’s a way to bring back the 80s as such, which is when most of us 20-somethings were kids. Childhood memories FTW :D
Meh. I’m 19. They’re trying to bring the 90s back. Nostalgic as it is, the fashion that they’ve decided to bring back is still repulsive.
Agreed. I’m 21, and frankly, I don’t want to see anything from my childhood come back.
If everyone says fuck you to the fashion world than we might be able to save ourselves.
But if everyone does that then we have them running around in Walmart MuMus and that scares me even more.
Did you hear the latest trend is see-through jeans? I kid you not. Google it. Gross!!!
um, no.
Shoulder pads need to be dragged into the woods, shot, and buried in a shallow grave.
