Amen to Cheesepop's comment...Much more eloquently written and a whole lot more sensible than the article itself...

FIrst off, when you say 118,000 up for adoption, how do you get off rounding that to 200,000 up for adoption? And if you're complaining about the octo-mom being a "fame whore" why further that by bringing her back into public eye by making references to her? You're only giving her what she wants then,

As for the rest of the article, while I agree it is her right to decide whether or not she wants to have any more children as it is her body and tactfully planned out, it is also the doctor's decision to decide what procedures he preforms, especially since his reasonings are just as well planned out. She can still get the surgery but she should just do it with someone who supports it. Compare it to gay marriage. Gays now have the right to get married in enough states across the country, but is it fair to have a priest wed them that does not believe in gay marriage? It's wreaking havoc on someone's conscious who actually tries to live up to their set morals. And should they refuse to compromise their morals they are bombarded with complaints and degrading insults tarnishing their reputations.

This article should really be about celebrating both the young mother and the doctor for having a plan and sticking to their morals. Just because the desired doctor does not preform the surgery it does not mean the lady cannot get the surgery. And just because the doctor refuses to preform a surgery he does not support, it takes not make him a bad guy. It makes him a man with morals- something not often found, or apparently praised, in today's society.

So Sarah, you remember how you wrote an article about me two and a half months ago and said I should just go get a tubal? THIS is why I haven't had one yet, and why I had an abortion.

What really bothers me about this is the double-standard. So, at 21 she is too young to decide for herself that she does not want to have anymore children, but at 21 she is not too young to decide that she wants to have children. Seriously? Why should I be forced to wait until I'm 30+ to get voluntary sterilization when anyone of just about any age can have as many children as they please? And why is counseling mandatory? Counseling isn't mandatory for those wishing to give birth (although judging by the abundance of child abuse cases, maybe it should be!). I'm 27 now and I've known that I didn't want kids since I was young; having no desire to have kids doesn't mean that there is something wrong with you. Getting sterilized is my attempt at being responsible, which is more than I can say for the likes of Octo-Mom, et al.
So say I get my tubes tied and then regret my decision (How I'm more likely to regret my decision if they're tied when I'm younger is lost on me.), so what? There are still plenty of options open to me. There are thousands of children waiting to be adopted into loving homes, for example. Adoption is a more responsible choice, in my opinion, than further polluting the already over-populated earth with my biological children just because I'm on an ego-trip anyway.
Some of you are saying, "So the husband should just get snipped. Problem solved!" While that may solve the problem for this particular couple, it doesn't alleviate the fact that this in and of itself is a double standard (The man can chose to get sterilized at 21, but the woman cannot?) nor does it solve the plight of young single women who want the procedure--My current boyfriend getting "snipped" doesn't help me down the road when we're not together anymore.

Why can't he just go through the doctor's office and get himself "snipped snipped"? It only takes one day and then he'll feel right as rain. It is so much more painful for a woman.

I honestly can't believe he turned her down. Had she wanted an abortion, THAT would have been a different ballgame. There are just as much women out there who regret abortions as the women who can't have babies.

I think this couple has a good head on their shoulders.
I wish all the luck in the world to them.

Cat people want a perminate solution not to have to worry about a "accident" that our society dearly loves. Both should get a sterilization. the woman because it is the female who gets pregnant the male because he does not want to take chances and who is to say that they will be in a "closed" relationship!!

I agree, tubal ligation is not illegal. If one doctor doesn't do it, just move on to the next. Everyone's happy.

Damnit.

Someone has been pulling my leg.
They will suffer for this, oh yes.

(I am so glad that I never had the comfort level necessary to call someone that!)

Most British people consider it a revolting term too, it's not something you hear in anything like polite society. My charming sister once tried to teach my son to say it and I just about decked her. Of course when my mother asked what was going on she totally denied it and said she was trying to teach him to say 'cock' instead like that's really much better.
