Gay Marriage Legalized in New Hampshire

Another victory!

Gov. John Lynch — who personally opposes gay marriage — signed the legislation legalizing same-sex marriage in New Hampshire on Wednesday afternoon, after the law briefly headed back to the Senate from some tweaks. Lynch, a Democrat, had promised a veto if the law didn’t clearly spell out that churches and religious groups would not be forced to officiate at gay marriages or provide other services. Legislators made the changes.

I’m fine with this. I think most same-sex supporters are fine with this. The church’s business is the church’s business. I don’t much care what they do or don’t officiate at or what they do or don’t recognize. What matters is what’s recognized by the government, and now same-sex relationships have access to the same protection under New Hampshire law as “opposite sex” relationships.

New Hampshire is the sixth state in the U.S. to legalize gay marriage. The decision leaves Rhode Island as the only New England state not to allow same-sex marriages — and that state isn’t expected to change that anytime soon. But still! It’s catching! Look out, right-wing America. We’ll have your children worshiping the devil soon enough.

Rhode Island will get there, sooner than you think.

So proud of my lovely 603! Is it bad that I want to fly back to Cali now and rub it in all their faces? I’ll be back there in a week, so I guess I can do it then. Hey, they made fun of me for going on hay rides and apple picking in the fall, so I think I can gloat a little now that NH recognizes gay marriage before CA, right?

C’mon RI, you can do it! You are little but Newport is gorgeous and you had the first Nordstroms in NE, so you are already awesome, you just have the chance to be that much MORE awesome!
