Dick Cheney Speaks Out in Favor of Gay Marriage
25 Comments | Posted by Sasha in Dick Cheney, gay marriage
Former Republican VP Dick Cheney spoke at the National Press Club for the Gerald R. Ford Foundation journalism awards on Monday, and he was asked about recent rulings and legislative action in Iowa and elsewhere that allowed for gay couples to legally wed.
Said Cheney:
“I think that freedom means freedom for everyone. As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay and it is something we have lived with for a long time in our family. I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish. The question of whether or not there ought to be a federal statute to protect this, I don’t support. I do believe that the historically the way marriage has been regulated is at the state level. It has always been a state issue and I think that is the way it ought to be handled, on a state-by-state basis. … But I don’t have any problem with that. People ought to get a shot at that.”
I agree with VP Cheney that it’s a state issue, but I also appreciate him taking a clear position in favor of gay marriage. This is a stronger pro-gay opinion than we’ve heard even out of Barack Obama. Come on, President Obama! Let the world know you think that civil rights ought to be extended to all citizens.

I can appreciate his stance on gay marriage and I’m kind of wowed that he even made such a brass comment, based on his previous politics, but I still think the man’s a three-ring circus asshole.
what in the what?
I do not trust anything this man says. Including this.
Cheney’s daughter is a lesbian. I’m sure he means what he’s saying. However, what he is saying is that gay marriage should be decided on a state-by-state basis, which is exactly Obama’s stance. Also, Cheney has absolutely no political capital to lose in saying this. He never said it while in office. I’m an Obama supporter, but I think his vague pro-civil union, states’ rights stance is intentionally and calculatedly moderate.
How dare he not be radical
Speak for yourself, because you don’t speak for me. I think that Obama’s stance is politically designed to piss off as few people as possible. I don’t disagree with the stance.
But thanks for trying.
Well duh, you don’t get far in politics pissing everyone off
I don’t think we’re disagreeing here…
I am happy that a very right wing republican openly supports gay marriage,
but I get the sensation that certain type of people that only support it because they are “affected” by its consecuences and not because they really believe in human equality
anyway, less is nothing
Obama doesn’t support gay marriage, most blacks don’t. And before anyone starts screaming racism be advised that polls show 70% of blacks in California are strongly against gay marriage. Homophobia is a BIG problem in the black community but no one will talk about it for obvious reasons.
“And before anyone starts screaming racism be advised that polls show 70% of blacks in California are strongly against gay marriage.”
This meme is so old and tired. It was based on an incorrect exit poll. Stop spreading it please, the racism helps no one.
Incorrect according to who? All the major media outlets reported it. And if you don’t think their is a problem with homophobia in the black community then you obviously don’t listen to rap music or visit the ghetto often.
Homophobia transcends race. It’s not some issue. Being black doesn’t = homophobic. The reason more blacks may appear homophobic is because religion runs deep in black culture. I don’t listen to rap, no, but I am aware of the hate speech in the lyrics.
Keep in mind, the MSM is always looking for any kind of drama. They’ll always report stories that involve some kind of drama (even if it’s just hearsay) over those that don’t. Also remember that statistic was repeated over and over by Conservative pundits. Pundits like to pull shit out of their asses all the time.
Again, does rap music properly represent the entirety of African-American culture? Does “ghetto living” properly represent the whole of black culture? No, but that’s a part of the “black people are like this” shtick.
Prop 8 passed because whites, blacks, Latinos, Asians, and everyone voted for it. If you think homophobia is a uniquely black problem, then you are wildly deluded.
God, I so quickly tire of this whole “but the black people are the WORST!” crap where it is not even relevant or appropriate. Questions that need to be asked about that poll: Does 70% of people polled equal 70% of voters? Was this a representative sample? Do 70% of black Californians represent the entirety of the African-American community? The poll was flawed, but it is religiously cited because it feels really sexy for people to say “as much as blacks complain about discrimination, they’re the most prejudiced ones of all.” It fits a narrative, a racist narrative, at that.
Bullshit. If a poll was released tomorrow saying 70% of WASPS were homophobic everyone would sit here trashing white people. As it is it’s a total hatefest against Christians on sites like this. Real fair blaming all Christians for a new nuts. Why is it ok to make blanket statements about whites, Christians, Republicans, “rednecks” ect, but when you say something truthful about a minority person everyone screams racism? Reverse racism is just as ugly as plain ole’ KKK nonsense.
“Reverse racism is just as ugly as plain ole’ KKK nonsense.”
I see your bullshit and raise you “Are you f***ing kidding me???”
I am a two-times-a-week attending, Bible-teaching, evangelical, Holy-Spirit-doctrine-espousing Christian. Please miss me with that nonsense that it’s all the same. It’s not. It’s all wrong, but it’s not all equal.
And I have no issues with speaking something truthful about a minority person, but when you use that PERSON to justify stereotyping an entire GROUP, that is racism, or sexism, or ableism, or… you see where I’m going with this.
And you’re right, more and more, people are painting Christians and Republicans with a broad brush. I don’t condone that either, but to somehow argue that this is an any way the same as being ruthlessly terrorized by a hate group that bombs, murders, and physically intimidates folks is just plain silly.
Whoa! When somebody else does it it’s a “blanket statement” but when you do it it’s “something truthful about a minority person”??
By the way, just like the rap subculture, WASPS are a subculture.
“God, I so quickly tire of this whole “but the black people are the WORST!” crap where it is not even relevant or appropriate. ”
me too x10000
We’re talking about Cheney speaking out for gay marriage (sort of) and out of nowhere, someone is all, well….. black people hate gays. When people throw out shit like that out of nowhere, it’s just kind of like…. huh. tell me how you REALLY feel.
Some of you talk about grouping people together… Well people do tend to follow patterns… It not sterotyping,, its called profiling. And the FBI and other government agencies use this because it works. There is alway exception to every rule. But on the whole they are correct.
People who listen to rap music statistically score lower on test scores, etc…
As a scientists I am always amazed at how little people understand statistics, and what they mean. A statistic is only as good as your sample, so unless I know where a sample comes from, I pay not attention to the statistic attached.
@Fairness doctrine (ironic name)
Two things:
From January 20th, 1981 – January 20th, 2008 (excluding 1993-2001) what good did the Republicans accomplish? I will only accept actual historical facts and not right-wing revisionism.
and…
“say something truthful about a minority person everyone screams racism Reverse racism is just as ugly as plain ole’ KKK nonsense.”
The whole point was that it WAS. NOT. TRUE. Reverse racism? Stop listening to Rush and think for yourself.
Why do you assume that anyone who’s point you don’t agree with is some kind of nazi? Bigoted much?
Yawn.Yes that’s exactly what I said.
People who attend church on a regular basis are more likely to oppose gay marriage. Blacks have higher church attendance than whites. Latinos and Asians are somewhere in the middle.
Technically, if someone says that most black in California voted Prop8, they are right, but its not necessarily because they are black, its because of the religion. That said, since religion is a large part of black culture, homophobia is also a predominate feature of black culture. How many out black men do you know?
