Despite the fact that Seinfeld is in syndication, the recently-resurrected Sponge is not.
The Today Sponge, initially released in the early 1980s but taken off of the market due to contamination incidents, was revamped and re-marketed as a new item in 1995. The Sponge subsequently became a hot topic of popular culture during its time and after being taken off the market (much to our beloved Elaine Benes’ chagrin), it will now be re-released to the masses this year.
The sponge, which is a female contraceptive that serves a purpose similar to the diaphragm, is coated with a form of spermicide and inserted into the vagina prior to intercourse. While more traditional birth-control methods are around 97-99% accurate in preventing pregnancy, the sponge, however, is only at the ninetieth percentile for conception prevention.
The Today Sponge will be re-released this weekend in CVS stores nationwide and will retail at approximately $9 per box. Fill your closets while you can — supplies are probably not expected to last long!

90 just isn’t enough
Today Sponge is available online for $13.99 (todaysponge.com). I have not seen anyone price it at $9.00. More on efficacy here: http://todaysponge.com/images/pdf/Edelman1.pdf
