Your Bra Just Might Save Your Life

Underwire Push-Up Bra Pictures Photos Sexy LadyWe’re only three weeks into this site, and I’ve already received countless e-diatribes on its tagline, “Feminism in a Bra.” I like the tagline. I own the website. Ergo: The tagline stays. I think the connotation there is priceless and dead-on and we’re keepin’ it. If I had to re-premise this site every time a woman emailed me with her understanding of feminism and why (she thinks) it differs from my understanding of feminism, we’d never get anything done around here. Discuss your concept of feminism in the comments, people. That’s what the site’s here for. Why on earth are you emailing me? It’s not my job to fix feminism. I just run a website. It’s your job to use it to fix feminism.

That said, how fitting that I should come across this story about a woman who was saved by her bra:

A 57-year-old Detroit woman avoided serious injury when the underwire on her bra deflected a bullet shot at her from next door, police said.

The woman, who lives on the West side of Detroit, saw a group of men breaking into a neighbor’s house on Tuesday morning. When the men spotted her, one of them fired a shot at her, a police spokesman said.

The bullet struck the underwire on the woman’s bra and that saved her from a more serious injury, police said.

“It did slow the bullet down,” said Detroit police spokesman Phillip Cook. “She sustained injuries but they’re not life threatening.”

How large was the underwire on this woman’s bra? Or did the men actually just throw the bullet at her?

Regardless, the message is crystal clear. If you think bras deprive women of their freedom, keep in mind that they might also be saving their lives. That’s why our feminism? Is in a bra. With lots and lots of underwire.

  1. Wow! Bra as bulletproof vest … unbelievable!

One of the neatest things about this site, in my humble opinion, is that it is taking steps to redefine feminism for the … oughts (2009 … what the heck do we call this decade anyway?).

My back-of-the-brain definition of feminism is tied up in my mother’s copy of “Our Bodies, Ourselves” and the sort of vague notion that women should be fighting some sort of good fight. That fight, while tragically far from over, has become lower on the in-front-of-your-face radar.

What you’ve done with this site is address issues extremely relevant to feminism in an educated, technologically-savvy way. You’ve turned it into issues and stories based on research.

Please keep up the great work–you are redefining at least one reader’s notion of what feminism is and my need to be educated, informed, and involved. Thank you : )

  2. I really do like “Feminism in a Bra” – That phrase is empowering! I’m a Gen Y feminist. I believe that Feminism is about woman’s strength, to push herself to defy any limitations she or anyone else put on her.
It’s not as petty as how one feels in a bra.

  3. I personally LOVE the tagline – it really works for feminism in the noughties / teenies.
And may I also say how much I hate the words ‘noughties’ and ‘teenies’. But apparently that’s what we must call them…
Does anyone have any better ideas that I can suggest to people in order to save my sanity?

  4. As a “well-endowed” woman, I find bras essential to my comfort. They hold the girls up, help with my posture, and generally help me feel better about the way I look. Does that make me any less of a feminist than a woman fortunate enough not to have to wear one?

Like a lot of things, I think feminism has gotten bogged down in details. A sociology teacher in high school used to kid me about how I felt about a man opening the door for me. Did that enrage me as a feminist?

My reply was, if someone’s nice enough to open a door for me, I say thank you. If they don’t, I have two functioning arms that can perform the job quite well. It’s no big deal either way.

Now ask my opinion on women earning 20 cents less on the hour than men for doing the same job.

  5. i am, personally, bamboozled about what bras have to do with feminism…now, i get that there was some bra-burning thing like in the 70′s and women were revolting… yadda yadda… but honestly? bras? why not tampons? or vagisil? i mean, these are tools availabvle to women should they choose to use them. i personally love a sexy push up bra– makes me feel powerful and gorgeous. i don’t, however, think it really has to do with how the world views me… i hope i am defined by my brans more that my bra…
