Here’s a sneak preview of Drew Barrymore in her upcoming film, Grey Gardens, based on the 1975 cult documentary of the same name. The flick follows Jackie O’s eccentric aunt, Edith “Big Edie” Beale, and her daughter, Little Edie, who lived in squalor in a 28-room mansion in New York’s East Hampton. As Little Edie, Drew ages from a glamorous 18-year-old in 1930s New York City to a 61-year-old recluse. Jessica Lange co-stars as Big Edie.
Drew’s spoken openly about losing weight and being a nervous wreck during filming. “The expectations I put on myself were definitely life-changing for me, ones that absolutely caused physical and mental despair for a long time. I cared so much about wanting to do a good job on this that I did things I’ve never done before in order to achieve it.”
She prepared by forcing herself into total seclusion for about three months to actually live as Edie. “I had no one to talk to except for Jessica and Michael because I didn’t feel comfortable talking to anybody else about it,” she said. “I also wrote on an IBM Selectric typewriter at night and wrote these manifestos about the way I felt.”
Listen. I love Drew Barrymore, but maybe she should have eaten a little more and spent a tad less time in isolation. This performance feels hollow, and the accent’s just a nightmare. There’s a such thing as trying too hard to do something right. Drew’s a natural performer, but she allowed herself to be miscast here. It’s the wrong role for her, and she’s pushing herself to do something she’s just not made to do.

Oh god. Crash and burn.
Poor girl..
Wow… She does not fit that role.. at all.
It seems embarrassing for her, the accent? and the acting?
Oh my.
I’m withholding judgement until I see the movie. And as for the accent isn’t that how the Kennedy’s talked? That’s how JFK sounded.
that was just so awkward. i agree w/ jen though it’s hard to tell if that little snippet is enough to judge the whole movie by…could just be a rough patch or something. i love drew barrymore so i hope this doesn’t flop!
Any of you seen the original docu Grey Gardens? Barrymore’s portrayal of middle-aged Little Edie in this clip is spot on! The young Little Edie clip seemingly not so much, however, her hair is GORGEOUS!
OK first of all, they shouldn’t have even made a remake of this movie in the first place. Apparently the status of “Cult Classic” has no merit anymore. It is a classic because of what it is, and it can never be duplicated. But if they absolutely have to ruin such a profound movie they could have at least placed a good actress in the lead. She is going to ruin the character of Little Edie. So basically she put herself through isolation and starvation for nothing, because she sucks..
Grey Gardens 2009 is a remake?
Oh God, that was painfully bad.
I enjoyed checking out your blog today and I will be back to check it more in the future so please keep up your good quality work. I love the colors that you chose, you are quite talented!
